The country that I was in while undertaking this project was on Adnyamathanha Land in the Ikara-Flinders Ranges. This was a magical place to conduct this research as the area is going through Kudlilla or the flooding time in the Kaurna calendar. My local weather station was the Bureau of Meteorology station in Hawker, SA, which I monitored over the time that I was there.

The Kudlilla season is the time to wash the earth and comes with large heavy rains and flooding, Kudlinthi, with strong North and Westerly winds, Wartapukkara. While in the Ikara-Flinders Ranges this was very apparent with large rainfall events of 10-15mm and wind gusts up to 100km/h, a rather uncomfortable experience whilst camping in a tent!
Whilst the Kaurna calendar does not directly cover the Ikara-Flinders Ranges, the climate behaviour was very similar and the indicators were clear.

It was a blisteringly cold beginning to my time in the Adnyamathanha country, with the coldest night being close to zero degrees and rainy overcast days. One day we received close to 15mm of rain and crazy winds as some big systems made their way over the area. It was very much a hot mug of coffee, put on the fleeces and tell stories around a fire kind of time. I didn't take my beanie off for four days, even in bed!
However, towards the end of the week the wind became still, the birdlife was teeming and I experienced some beautiful springtime days. It became apparent that these showers are an integral part to the growth and survival of the plant and animal life in that area, as all the waterways and lagoons are ephemeral which became full and a meeting place for wildlife. I saw Apostle Birds nesting getting ready for their breeding season, as well as a large variety of Acacias and wildflowers budding and beginning to flower, which both indicate a change in season.

The first day of observations was the coldest, with a low of 0.4 and a high of 11.9, strong Southeasterly winds were blowing and we received 5mm of rain overnight. The morning was crisp and there was dew on the ground at sunrise. This continued for the next four days, with the highest rainfall on Friday of close to 20mm, and the windiest day the next week which averaged 44km/h.
