While most modern electronic health records (EHR) offer an automatic MEWS calculator to alert nursing staff when a patient’s condition declines, the nurses at Centennial Medical Center felt that the four basic vital signs (blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, and temperature) didn’t give a complete picture. Working with a health informatics specialist, they added an oxygen saturation value to the MEWS calculator. At Southern Illinois Healthcare, the chief informatics officer worked with nursing staff to develop and implement nursing care plans and other nursing documentation modules to improve charting. The new system also includes enhancements, such as embedded videos and information on rarely performed procedures, so nurses can get the information they need at the time they need it, right at the patient’s bedside.

The field of health informatics is making a real difference in the lives of nurses and their patients. From improved decision-making to decreased medication errors, health informatics professionals are at the forefront of harnessing information technology for better patient care.
