Nursing informatics (NI) is the specialty that integrates nursing science with multiple information management and analytical sciences to identify, define, manage, and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in nursing practice. NI supports nurses, consumers, patients, the inter professional healthcare team, and other stakeholders in their decision-making in all roles and settings to achieve desired outcomes. This support is accomplished through the use of information structures, information processes, and information technology.

The environments in healthcare have encompassed more than just a physical location. There is an increase in the use of technology such as mobile computers and wireless solutions, and automated exchanges between
providers and patients. Adapting to these new environments requires a paradigm shift for how care is communicated and delivered, which requires knowledge of the evolution of new technologies. Nurses are at the center of this advancement as professionals with the greatest amount of direct patient care.

The Modified Early Warning System, or MEWS, is a “scorecard” that assigns a numerical value to the patient’s vital signs readings and calculates a score that indicates the severity of a person’s illness and the likelihood of escalation to a critical condition. This score is used by nursing staff to decide whether to call a rapid response team or otherwise intervene.

While most modern electronic health records (EHR) offer an automatic MEWS calculator to alert nursing staff when a patient’s condition declines, the nurses at Centennial Medical Center felt that the four basic vital signs (blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, and temperature) didn’t give a complete picture. Working with a health informatics specialist, they added an oxygen saturation value to the MEWS calculator. They discovered that medical decision-making improved dramatically, positively impacting ICU admissions and rapid response team deployment.

Health informatics systems are simplifying the supply chain that affects patient care at the nursing level. Combining wireless technology and radio frequency identification (RFID), nurses are able to locate essential equipment such as EKG machines, IV pumps, portable computers, and infusion pumps with the click of a button. Some hospitals are even using RFID technology to track surgical patients through each step of their procedures, improving efficiency and utilization of operating room and recovery room beds.

Nurses spend over half of their time in documentation. A recent study showed that just 20 percent of a nurse’s day was spent on direct patient care, and just 7 percent on assessment and observation. At Southern Illinois Healthcare, the chief informatics officer worked with nursing staff to develop and implement nursing care plans and other nursing documentation modules to improve charting. The new system also includes enhancements, such as embedded videos and information on rarely performed procedures, so nurses can get the information they need at the time they need it, right at the patient’s bedside.

The field of health informatics is making a real difference in the lives of nurses and their patients.
