A pharmacologist is a scientist who does research and experiments testing drugs and studying the effects on animals and humans. As a pharmacologist, you will be a type of medical scientist. You will be working in labs testing the effects drugs have on the human body, how drugs are absorbed into the human body, and how they medically react in the body. You may also choose to study how drugs work in animals instead. You work with drugs and change ingredients, add or subtract ingredients, and alter certain medications until you reach the desired effect. The hours are rarely consistent each day. The amount of time you work is dependent on the experiment or work you are doing and the time you need to monitor and manage it.

To become a pharmacologist, you must take classes in toxicology, chemistry, biology, pharmacology, and microbiology. You must have an advanced degree such as a Ph.D or a Pharm.D in order to find a job. You should also gain hands on training whether this is through lab or clinical experiences, or certain internships. Also, if you are planning to administer drugs to humans or interacting with patients you must meet the qualifications of a licensed M.D which requires graduating from an accredited medical school, you must pass licensing exams, and you must complete residency requirements.

He is generally recognized as the founder of modern pharmacology. He obtained his medical doctorate in 1866 with a thesis on the measurement of chloroform in blood. He worked at Dorpat and became a professor of pharmacology at the University of Strassburg. He studied the pharmacology of chloroform with chloral hydrate. He showed that muscarine evoked the same effect on the heart as electrical stimulation of the vagus nerve in 1869, and in 1885 he introduced urethane as a hypnotic. His findings lead to many other discoveries within pharmacology and he trained many men who became professors and who also had a major impact in pharmacology.
