Mildred Taylor creates mood and atmosphere by making the atmosphere surreal.
The death of clarence is unexpected for everyone and Mildred Taylor uses the word ' dreamlike' to further potray that the death of clarence is impossible. This can be seen from ' for the longest time we just stood there staring at clarence , but i didnt know what to feel.' This explains that the death of clarence is a very unexpected thing to the black community. Thus, this is how Mildred Taylor creates a surreal atmosphere.

A sombre mood is created by Mildred Taylor in the passage. She creates such a mood by her setting in the passage and what she makes the characters do. Firstly , the room that they were in was "lit by one single kerosene lamp and its light reflected on Clarence" . Mildred Taylor makes the setting of the room in such a way that when a reader were to visualize the room , they would feel the sombreness of the situation. "For the longest time , we just stood there staring at Clarence" and " she glanced at us and was quiet", the characters in the passage are quiet and this makes the mood very sombre. The characters are just staring at Clarence and this also makes the mood of the passage very sombre

the mood and atmosphere created by Mildred Tayor was a dreamy one. It was dreamy because the passing of Clarence was a sudden and unexpected one and before Clarence death was Reverend Charles Gabson death.Having two close friends pass on within a short period of time can be hard to accept escpecially for Cassie. The passage where it says " For The Longest time we just stood there staring at Clarence , but i didnt know what to feel.It was as if something had turned off in me , making it diffcult to feel anything. Too much had happened .I felt all drained inside . " and " Stacey spoke quietly. " We'll have to call down home .

Mildred Taylor creates the mood and atmosphere of sadness. as cassie and the rest would never imagine this would happen to them , this can be evident from ''our eyes on Clarence as if expecting him to suddenly jump up , grin, and strip away the pallor of gray that had settled over him'' this tells us that there is sadness , lack of lives and monotony and there is too much to handle for cassie and the rest and hence when the reader reads it they would feel emotional and sad as Clarence death is an escape to the army as he is a coward .

The mood and atmosphere created by Mildred Taylor is melancholic. The appearance of Clarence was emphasized a lot as seen from "He looked soldier-perfect. His clothes were newly pressed. His hair was combed and parted, just right; his fingernails were dirt-free clean, and his face look as if he was sleeping at all. He lay too straight, too perfect, for that." Clarence is now described as an object or a mannequin, lacking of life. This will affect and bring about the mood and atmosphere created by Mildred Taylor.

The mood and atmosphere created by Mildred Taylor in this extract is moody and gloomy because when Clarence died , at the farewell , Cassie and the black community seems so quiet and do not know what to do. 'The pallor of gray' sets the mood and atmosphere because the colour gray represents a sadness of the Clarence death.'For the longest time we just stood there staring at Clarence' tells us that they feel so unexpected that Clarence died just like that and the black community feel the lost of Clarence and cannot seem to do anything. Therefore this shows us the gloomy mood and atmosphere created by MIldred Taylor

The first mood and atmosphere of that Mildred Taylor creates are the gloominess which linked up to sadness and lack of life.Mildred.T creates this mood and atmosphere to build up the the stting of what is going to happen nexts. With the mood and atmospheres created it will make the readers have the feels of the situation occuring in the book.''The room was lit by one kerosene lamp, and its light reflected on Clarence, laid out straight and neat on a board that rested on bed.''This explained the mood and atmosphere of gloomy, sadness and lack of lives .In this sentence, will create a vivid imagery of Clarencen's lifeless face and a very pale yellowish face which is rfelected with the one kerosene lamp. Therefore,i can say Mildred Taylor creates the mood and atmosphere of gloominess which linked up to sadness and lack of life.

Mildred Taylor created an intenseful mood and atmosphere when the usually outspoken Cassie was quiet and had nothing to say for the first time. Everyone in the room seemed to be in deep thoughts. When they were in the same room as Clarence, Cassie had said that 'neither little willie nor I said anything'. This signifies that they were still traumatized by the truth about Clarence being dead. Cassie, whom always had opinions about things went silent for the first time and Stacey's 'voice was dreamlike. Everything was dreamlike'. This intenses the atmosphere in the room as the characters we all out of place. They were not who they usually were in the story anymore. A bitter atmosphere was created when Willie blamed himself for Clarence's death. When Stacey asked Willie why he wanted to stay here with Clarence, he had cut in 'his eyes were bleary "should've done stay here with Clarence. It was me should've stayed with him, but I...I had to see memphis_" ' There was a long pause after Willie said that and

Mildred Taylor created the mood and atmosphere of intense sadness by their action and words. Intense sadness is created through using Little Willie, "Should've have done stayed with him." and "his eyes were bleary.". The word "bleary" causes it to be create an more intense sadness as "bleary" means blurred or dimmed, as from sleep or weariness, this makes readers reflect back on what happened to them when they were still in Memphis, thinking about everything bad that happened to them and how much they suffered while they were on their way to Memphis , causing the mood and atmosphere to be intense sadness for readers.

 i) The mood and atmosphere created by Mildred Taylor is very gloomy. Cassie’s reaction to Clarence’s death was unsure of what she should feel instead of being sorrowful. Clarence was considered one of her good friends, she should be experiencing sadness but instead, she ‘felt all drained inside.’ This implies that her emotions was ‘drained’ because firstly, she has never experience death. Secondly, so much has happened to them from the start of the journey till now. One big incident after another has kept falling onto them. This could be too much for a teenager to handle. Hence, Cassie's reaction to Clarence's death is one of the gloomy mood and atmosphere that Midred Taylor created.

QUESTION (i)
Mildred Taylor also created a sorrow and tense mood and atmosphere.

"Little Willie turned to him now, and and his eyes were bleary. Should've done stayed with him before." Little Willie felt regret that he did not stay with Clarence before the death of Clarence and this contributes to the tense and sorrowful mood and atmosphere. The sorrow felt by Clarence would effect the readers in a manner where they would feel empathetic towards Little Willie as he felt regret for not spending the time he had with Clarence instead. Regret is one of the worst feelings someone could feel and the reader might have a personal experience that they've been through before that they can relate with. Thus, more emotions would be felt by the reader and they would be more intrigued to continue reading the book. Therefore, Mildred Taylor created a sorrow and tense mood and atmosphere.

The mood that the people are having was melancholy ,the feeling of sadness and the feeling of emptiness inside them as they watch Clarence laying down in perfect form. Mildred Taylor uses this mood to make us understand the feeling of sadness the character is feeling. The sentence “we stood there staring at Clarence , but I didn’t know what to feel” tell us the emotion of the character. The sentence “staring at Clarence” tells us the sadness and powerless to do anything but to just stand there and watch as his friend ,Clarence .the sentence saying “I don’t know what to feel” tells us the emptiness inside the character, the feeling of loss and despair leads them to the feeling of emptiness where they cant feel a thing no more.
