Hello my name is Dr. Bethany Osborne and my pronouns are she/her. I am delighted to be your professor for Sociological Perspectives in Community Development. This is the very first time that we have run this course and I am excited to learn with you. I anticipate great opportunities for discussion over the course of the semester.
My favourite childhood toy was a set of blocks that my great uncle had made from scraps of wood. When I was a small child, I could often build block towers that were as tall as I was.
We are all embarking on an adventure. As I embark upon each new course, with a new group of students, I know that there will be things that I will learn from each of you. I look forward to learning from your experiences, from the ways that you interact with the content and from the creative ways that you engage with the work.

Hello Everyone, my name is Kiannah. That is pronounced as (Ki-An-Nah). I completed my SSW back in 2013 here at Sheridan College. I am one of the alumni Women's Basketball Team OCA Champions. I have had the opportunity to work at Salvation Army, working in the Correctional Facility program for youth reintegrating back into society. Then I transitioned into the healthcare sector working at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital for 5 Years, as a Personal Support Worker and an Unit Assistant to the nurses, doctors and most important the patients. I am excited to embark on this new journey with everyone; all heading towards graduating with honours, knowledge and a deeper understanding on how we can help change; and better our world today, one person at a time. My favourite childhood toy was my doll name Krystal. She was my best friend. She went everywhere I went. We tried to dress the same. We played amazing games together and she looked just like me. Yes, my Godfather searched for an African Doll that looked just like me; so I could relate to her by colour, eyes and hair. I remembered I could tell her all of my secrets and fears. And of course she wouldn't or should I say couldn't say a word to anyone. lol. But again, I cant wait to look back on all of these assignments, discussions and teachable moments and say, man look how far we have come. I am grateful, a little nervous but truly just excited to start this new chapter with you all. Lets make great memories together!

Hello everyone~ my name is Sumi Park and my pronouns are she/her. I have always been interested in Arab newcomers and seniors. They have always motivated me in my life and learning.
I moved to Lebanon in 2014 as an NGO staff and worked in a Syrian refugee camp. Arabs are warm and friendly countries I always miss. Then I came to Canada, completed my SSW from Sheridan in 2021, and have been working at the Arab Newcomer Center. Through this bachelor's program, I look forward to expanding my view and professionalism.
My favorite childhood toy was five small stones called "GongGi" in Korean. In English, it is called Jackstones. What I particularly liked is that it is easy to carry in my pocket and I can play with it anytime, anywhere. When I took out 5 Korean jackstones from my pocket and laid them on the ground, all my friends gathered. Ever since I was little, I liked the word 'together', and I liked group more than alone. Even now, I belong to my family of three children and many communities such as a church, workplace, volunteer group, women's group, mission team, and Korean community. And now, I have one more class community which is with you. I encourage all of you who have come together for a variety of purposes and directions. I am ready to learn from you all. Nice to meet you!

However, my favorite person in the world, my Heroine, my Nanna, gifted me two of my favorite toys. One was a diary which she wrote lovingly to me and I to her. The second toy was a digital toy pet called a Tamagotchi. Both of these toys helped me cope with the hardship, taught me the importance of nurture as well as how to receive and give love.

This semester I would love to learn how to use my experiences as a triumphant overcomer as a blueprint for those who may need a helping hand with being tenacious in their life journey and successfully coping with hardship. I remember seeing it at the store and begging my mom to get it for me. As my mother was a single parent on a strict budget, she initially told me “No, next time”. However, as a bratty kid who wanted THAT beanie baby, I started to cry and begged her to get it for me. After crying and pleading, she finally gave in. Looking back, I realized two things. One, I was a GINORMOUS BRAT!! And two, my mother did a lot to keep me happy. However, that beanie baby did not go to waste, I took that cat everywhere. I fed him, every night he slept beside me; I think at one point I even bathed him?!? I loved that stuffed cat.. Until I moved and lost him in the process. But, I will never forgot how much that little gray stuffed animal gave me comfort.

This semester, I would like to further develop my research skills in the social work field. I never thought I would be interested in working with the older adult community, but when it came time to pick which area in SSW to go for I carefully chose Gerontology. I remember teachers also said that in 2025 the older adult community would be one of the largest populated community groups in Canada, so I picked it and I am very happy I did.

I have an older sister so she had all the cooler dolls of the early 80s like the Cabbage Patch Kids dolls, Care Bears, Popples, and the Glow-worm, fun times!

My own favourite toy was a doll named (I just found the name) Princess Wishing Star Doll. She had three stars on her Tyara that would light up when you touched the star on her chest with her magical wand. The three stars on her head said Yes, No or ? (question mark). The stars would all light up, but eventually, stop at one star. I always had a question for her and she always gave me an answer! ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️

This semester I will like to learn how to create change in a way that's most effective. This semester is going to challenge my writing skills and make me a MUCH better writer for sure. I understand in order to start creating the changes we would like to see within our communities, as well as workers in an organization, we have to take the correct steps and have the right tools to do so. Writing is one major tool.

I recently graduated from the SSW program at Sheridan. I am very excited to continue my learning journey with you. In this semester I am hoping to connect my peers and professors to build strong relationships as we embark on this learning journey together!

As a child, I couldn't say that I had a favorite toy. However, I did play with every and anything I could get my hands on. I would sit and talk to myself for hours. I guess this helps me to be creative in my adult life!

Hello Everyone,
I'm Jennifer.
This semester I would like to learn about the history of sociology, and how industrialization and urbanization created the need to study and understand people and communities. (Both the good and the bad consequences of it) This makes me think more about our present day and climate, and how advancements / changes in technology as well as the ways in which we communicate with one another (ie. social media) has affected community development.

As for my favourite childhood toy, I had to think way back to the 1980's! It was a toss up between my Jumbo Love Hippo which was a very large purple puffalump stuffed animal, and my Mon Chi Chi which was a cute little monkey. I could not fall asleep without my Jumbo Love, and I took my Mon Chi Chi everywhere with me.

This semester I am hoping to learn about "community development". I am also interested in learning how local agencies create financial sustainability. To simplify, I would like to move on from delivering programs to developing programs. I am an SSW Graduate, Aboriginal and an ALS registree.

I don't really remember having a favorite childhood toy. I grew up in "the country" so I had a life of experiential learning with horses, beautiful landscape and lots of tools and tractors. But if I had to pick, it would be working with horses...but not mean horses because those are dangerous animals...but the horses that really trusted you after a while. Those were the best toys.

I hope we all do well in the program. And it's amazing to be in the first cohort ever!
Daren

Hello everyone! I am Most Farjana Aktar. I graduated from Centennial College's SSW program in April. There are no memories of toys in my childhood that I can recall. Because of the cultural differences between my family and others, I don't have any toys in my house. While I was a child, instead of playing with toys, I read many comics, and one of my favorite comics was titled "Fantom".
