They encounter new words and listen, develop their vocab, and learn skills as they read.  In addition to this their attention span increases. We found that it is common for their books to have illustrations to help them connect the words, actions, and emotions to something easily ‘transcribed’ to them. We also found that they require short sentences with large amounts of spaces between them so the young readers can distinguish the different sentences and not get mixed up. So books with illustrations and Rhyming would appeal to beginning readers. Children have personal responses, creating strong connections with characters and actions.
