Formative assessment is goal based. There should be a goal in mind when making and using an assessment. Is it to find out the student's strengths? Or is it to find out what they need to work on? So formative assessment is a planned out way to look at your student and their progress, an idea of what you will do with that information and put it into work for your next lesson to help them.

1. Having them read a book and be able to tell me what the main characters problem is or what they are doing in the book. And repeating back to me what happened in the book.
2. Have them just read to you and listen to their fluency, word decoding, etc.
3. Reading a book together, alone or reading it to them and have them predict what might happen after reading a couple pages, and then use probing questions.
4. Simply listening while the students read to themselves

I've learned about the same in other classes. I liked how she didn't always listen to the state mandates and just knew what was right for her students. She focused on her teaching and her observing her kids so she knew them well and what was best for them. By doing so - her students will have good scores from her teaching not from the test prep. I like her outlook on assessment and how to implement it.

1. Because then I can see if they understand the plot line and the main idea. If they are comprehending their text level as well.
2. Just to hear them read and see where they are at with their fluency, word decoding, etc.
3. This way you are able to see where they're at with predicting story lines and thinking deeper.
4. Great simple way to observe and assess just based on listening.

Formative assessment is a way to get away from the meaningless piles of papers that get stacked on your desk with grades on them that don't help assess how your student is learning. Formative assessment is a hands on tool that helps us as teachers get to know our students better, and helps us learn what content we should be adding to our classroom to help further our students in their education.

1. I would use this one because then as the teacher you can walk throughout the room and observe everyones reading patters. How long it takes them to settle, how long it takes on a certain page, and those who seem to be enjoying or not enjoying their time. All these things that you observe can help bring you to a good lesson that you can teach in class.
2. You can use this one to see and observe who follows along in class as you, the teacher is speaking. It allows you to then ask questions and find the ones that comprehended the text, ones who may not have understood, or ones who just weren't paying attention as you were talking/reading

It is similar in the sense that I have learned that teachers need to pay attention to their students. They need to observe their students, and make their assessments off of the things they are doing, not off of a piece of paper that does not take much creative thinking. I think something that stood out to me though was when she talked about formative assessment being something that helps create our lessons for our kids. When we give the paper tests and assess assess assess, teachers do not get as much free reign to teach as much as they would like. When we use formative assessment we learn from our students what we should be using in the classroom to help them better learn.
