The Berlin Wall was built on August 13, 1961 during the Cold War in Berlin, Germany. It served to divide Eastern Berliners from fleeing and crossing over to the more prosperous West Berlin. The East was occupied by the Soviet Union, and the West was occupied by the United States, France, and Great Britain. The wall caused the deaths of many civilians in their attempt to escape, and was a prominent symbol in the Cold War.

Containment is the term for preventing the spread of communism beyond where it had previously existed. This term was common during the Cold War as the US put forth great effort in stopping the spread of communism by the Soviet Union. The US's policy of containment led to interference in other countries' politics, and ultimately the Korean and Vietnam wars.
