At first, I thought the Peer Supporter role was quite interesting because I saw my friend attend the training and learn how to use metaphoric cards. Back then, the cards felt kind of mysterious to me. I had also studied counselling before, so I felt that what Peer Supporters do is quite similar to what I learned in class, just a simpler and shorter version of a counselling session. That’s why I decided to join.

For me, being a Peer Supporter has been a really rich experience. I learned how to listen, understand, and support others using just a few basic helping skills (like paraphrasing, reflecting feelings, and summarising), which has also been helpful in my daily communication with others.

I also met many peers, each with their own stories. Some came with difficulties and challenges, while others were simply walking their journey at their own pace and in their own way. It felt really warm and meaningful when peers shared that they felt heard and relieved after the session. That sense of encouragement motivated me to continue supporting others.

So I know what it feels like to be helpless, lonely, and aimless. Hence I want to help those who are currently undergoing similar experience.

My overall experience as a peer supporter was nice. I met new people who are kind and friendly. I also felt proud of myself for being able to help my fellow peers.

I enjoyed learning new supporting techniques and analysing why and what works.

For those who wanna join:

Thanks for helping in making the world a kinder place!

I became interested in joining as a peer supporter because as a psychology student, I would like to gain some experience by stepping into the helping profession. I also happened to join one of the MCE sessions as a peer during the previous semester, which I found it interesting and fun. So when I saw there would be a training program held in this semester, I seized this opportunity and signed up for it.

From starting out in the training sessions to being on duty as a trainee peer supporter, I learnt a lot about applying helping skills into practical settings, where active listening can take place in the form of paraphrasing, summarising, reflection of feelings as well as clarification. I also got to step out of my comfort zone as I had to facilitate the sessions with someone whom I didn't know.

For me, the best part of this job was to be able to be present with the peers and connect with them through the metaphoric cards. I just feel honoured to be able to provide a safe space for them to share their thoughts and the struggles they faced.

To future peer supporters, I believe that as long as you have the passion to support others, you will be able to be committed to the job regardless of what's ahead of you. Wish you all the best in your helping journey!

Joining the Peer Supporter programme has been a real eye-opener for me. I’ve had the chance to meet and listen to people from very different backgrounds, each facing their own struggles—some visible, some not at all. It really made me realise how much we often underestimate what others are carrying silently.

What stood out most was how comforting it felt when someone shared that they finally felt listened to, understood, and supported. Knowing that a simple conversation could help them gain clarity or find possible solutions was incredibly meaningful to me.

I joined because I genuinely believe that having a safe space to talk can make a huge difference, and I wanted to be someone who could offer that support without judgment. Being a peer supporter has taught me empathy, patience, and the importance of showing up for others—and that’s something I’ll always carry with me.

I initially was drawn by the poster and wonder how it would be like to be a peer supporter, what is the magic behind the cards. But there was hesitation to sign up because I'm not the best at talking, not a very extroverted person either. However, I think it is a good opportunity to challenge myself and learn what goes behind these activities.

I definitely have gained much more than I expected. Firstly is of course the skills to listen and support. No matter the peers come with worries or just simply curiosity, I think we are creating a wholesome and friendly environment for people to speak their minds and ideas, resulting in a more inclusive and supportive circle.

While I try to support others, I also make new friends that support me along the way too. We learn from each other and grow.

Therefore, I wish that more people can receive this kind of positive energy, spread it around the campus and create a supportive community.

I think being a peer supporter is a great path to helping peers to have someone to listen their feeling or story. Many peers may have internal issues that hidden silently. Being a peer supporter can help them to unlock this feeling by sharing their thoughts using metaphoric cards. I learnt many ways to dive into someone feeling using technic though by Miss Grace and Mr Lim. After joined this peer supporter, I become more polite to ask the others questions without hurting them using clarifying skill to make sure we are discussing the same thing.

Feel free to join peer supporter! You will learn a lot things and get chance to meet peers.

At first, I joined this program because my friend asked me to, and honestly, I just wanted to get some extra soft skill points. But as time went on, something changed.

What made me stay was the people. I could really feel the passion from everyone involved, and somehow it influenced me too. It didn’t feel like something I had to do anymore, it became something I wanted to be part of. Mr Lim and Ms Grace also made a big difference because they were so professional and responsible that I felt safe and supported throughout.

When I actually started doing my duty, I realised how meaningful this whole experience is. Sometimes in life, we don’t really have someone who truly listens to us. Or sometimes, we just need a space to talk, to understand ourselves better, and to slowly heal and this program creates that space.

While I was supporting others, I was also learning so much about myself. Listening to my peers made me reflect on my own thoughts and feelings. In a way, I wasn’t just helping them they were helping me too, this is the most unexpected part. So, I’m really grateful I chose to stay, because it changed me in ways I didn’t expect.

This community program can really boost your confidence in speaking with total strangers. It prepares you for the future when you start working and begin talking to others. It's a great opportunity to also train your skills especially if you are planning on diving into the psychology/counseling industry. This prepares you for the future, and slowly but surely trains your skills not on the job in the future, but gives you a head start and allows you to stand out from other candidates when going for interviews.

With the experience in helping others, it can also make one feel like they have made a difference in other people's life, and for some it will also lead to having a purpose in life as well. A goal in life, no matter how menial.

This outreach program is a great opportunity to prepare you for the future, to see that you are not alone in life. That you can be the change that kickstarts not only your own life, but others as well.

Looking back, my overall experience was really good, and I learned a lot through this activity. What I enjoyed the most is the sense of achievement I feel when I use the skills I have learned to help someone open up about their problems and start to understand their own situation better. Apart from that, I am happy to got to know many peers and help each other. I think that moment is worth. So if you are someone who finds this kind of activity interesting, I really encourage you to give it a try. Helping others is a good thing, and it also helps you grow.
