Student access to technology means...

Not only having access to technology, but also having access to internet access at home. Many families in my school are struggling currently with getting and maintaining consistent, good quality wifi and as a result the students are not doing well. They have to be able to connect to get the most out of the ipad and apps.

As Gorski states in Insisting on Digital Equity, "Who has the easiest, most
consistent access to these resources? How are educators using technology differently with different populations of students? Who stands to gain the most—economically, politically, and so on—from the growing urgency to technologize schools and classrooms?" (Gorski, 2009). We need to keep in mind that even though students may have devices that does not mean they have the ability to connect. Covid has proven the most difficult challenge in reaching these students who have limited means outside of the school infrastructure. Those with the economic means stand the gain the best foothold in future successes as a result.

Bridging the digital divide.

As Gorski states in Insisting on Digital Equity, "Despite the popular belief that identity-based discrepancies in physical access to computers and the Internet are disappearing, substantial gaps remain For example, although 70% of White adults in the United States use the Internet, only 57% of African Americans are online. (Gorski, 2009)

In my school we are 55% free and reduced lunch. We are considered an urban inner-city school. We serve a high percentage of African American and Hispanic families. White families are a minority in our building. As a result of the previous statistics we have to take into account many families do not speak English and many struggle maintaining internet service at home. Consequently, the students cannot receive help from their parents, cannot connect to the internet to ask for help, and unavoidably fall further behind. If we were in school daily, the school's infrastructure would supplement this issue, but more students are bound to fall through now.

To bridge the gap, every student has an iPad. Those who have no wifi at home or need help can physically come into the building by registering for a seat daily. However, if a parent is unwilling to bring their student physically into the building for whatever reason; that student is stuck as are we in trying to help.
