The first characteristic of Grit is interest. Interest in short terms is what you as an individual are passionate about. Taking interest in something like a goal or a job, means you are exploring things you like to help you identify your passion. It's proven that having interests can often help you commit to specific goals you set for yourself. Whether these are short or long term goals, having an interest to pursue these goals helps you to commit to them in the long run. Being able to identify our goals can greatly improve everything in our lives from communication to staying dedicated and creating newer goals for your interests.

Practice is usually described as how often you can commit to something. We learn to practice from the youngest age of gestation, where we learn to breathe, move, and control all bodily functions. When you practice you are creating and improving on new and old skills you may have learned or are still learning. Learning improves your skills so much that sometimes, things can be done repetitively without you even realizing it. Practice helps to build perseverance.

Purpose is defined as the reason for which something exists or for which something is created. Knowing your purpose improves resilience. It is also noted that grit and purpose are strongly connected. people who are grittier* are more motivated to identify their purpose and live a meaningful life. An easy equation to remember passion is INTEREST + PURPOSE= PASSION.

*(more passionate about their long term goals regardless of setbacks)

Hope is defined as your ability to handle setbacks or failure. Learning to push forward with a task or goal despite constantly getting the same result could be completely tiring. Yet at the same time it increases perseverance. The constant practice from repeating these goals help you to better understand and practice better when continuing these goals or tasks. Grit requires hope and hope is about perseverance. Learning to get back up when we fall and believing our efforts can improve our future for the better.

The equation best used for Perseverance is DAILY PRACTICE + HOPE= PERSEVERANCE

I CANT DO THIS PERSPECTIVE

People with this mindset tend to believe that your talents and intelligence are unchangeable. They believe that you are born with a certain amount of talent and intelligence no matter how much you practice or learn. They believe nothing can change the amount of talent or intelligence you have. This mindset often leads to anxiety and procrastination due to a fear of failure. People who have a fixed mindset can learn to change this mindset by practicing changing their goals to more short term goals. This makes the goals a little easier to manage, and causes less frustration.

Eminem's reaction and Grit

The professional I chose was Eminem. I chose this musical professional because majority of his music is expressed through his pain and hardships he had to experience in his life. I have always been a fan of Eminem since I was a little girl up until this day. The main challenge he faced in his entire career was his sobriety. although this may not seem like an obstacle or topic suitable for this project, I feel that sobriety and mental health have a lot to do with success in the music industry.

Part of grit is perseverance practice and, to me most importantly interest. During this interview there was a lot of information given by Eminem, which suggested that he used some charatceristics of grit. The main point I wanted to focus on was, in his interview when he is talking about his long time friend who happens to be deceased, Proof, he mentions his sobriety. He said

" Well, I don't know that I've learned anything. ... Well, you know, I guess I've actually learned quite a bit. As far as Proof passing away, I've gotten a little better at dealing with it. I guess as time goes by, you get a little better at dealing with something like that. And I've certainly learned from my own experiences with addiction. I don't know if this is gonna answer the question for you or not — but I've learned that you certainly can't get sober just because everyone else wants you to. You have to want to do it yourself. You know what I mean? When I first went into rehab, I kinda felt like I was doing it just because everyone else was ready for me to get sober. But I wasn't. And that is why I relapsed when I came out of treatment. When I came out of rehab. And it was because I just wasn't ready. I had to actually be ready, mentally, to say, "I'm done with this now. I've had enough."

This to me made me realize he proved that he used the characteristics of grit. He realized that he needed to fix his problem on his own terms. But once he fixed his mindset and showed interest in wanting to stop, he committed to that goal and got clean. Eminem had been clean for over 13+ years due to his perseverance in his sobriety journey.

Did Eminem Practice a growth mindset?

I would say initially he did not. I prefer to say his mindset was originally fixed. As unfortunate as it was, it took a horrible situation for him to want to stop and say I'm done and I'm ready to change. Struggling with addiction is hard enough by itself. Learning to take the steps necessary to say I'm done and I want help takes more than just grit. It takes Integrity. He learned over time that doing the same thing wasn't going to get him anywhere except hurt. HE learned to stop beating himself up for something he couldn't top ad he learned to better cope with certain situations. Although he is not 100% and still has plenty of bad days, he copes and manages in goals and success extremely well today all while maintaining his sobriety as a promise to his friend.

Grit and the growth mindset has helped me learn to always try to pursue and persevere through anything that I do. Although it may be hard, and I may get hit 57,000 times, I have to keep going because it's the only way to learn to grow. Growing is a part of life that we all must endure whether its in our personal or professional lives. The growth mindset has specifically taught me to try not to worry too much about the things I cant control Learning to reflect and harness these skills will greatly help me in the industry. I hope to utilize the information that was provided to my best advantage, and allow myself to be alright with making mistakes.
