This week’s discussion has not been new to me but though is still interesting to learn. I just didn’t get it why we only have to tackle the digestive system in particular excluding other organ systems of the human body. Firstly, we are required to answer a pre-requisite activity in relation to our preparation for the topic of the digestive system. Before answering the pre-requisite activity, I first read about the atlas about the whole digestive system, its parts, and its functions. Upon the process of answering the pre-requisite activity, I stumbled upon the questions regarding the various parts of the digestive system from the oral cavity to the anus. I actually enjoyed answering it. It wasn't easy yet it also wasn't hard. there are just enough information to process and I cannot say that once I read it, I got information overload, that was not the case which I really liked about the activity. 

The whole week didn't just tackle about the digestive system itself but the significance and purpose it serves in the body of the organism. In simpler terms, the main purpose and goal of the digestive system is to sustain the body with enough nutrition. Learning about nutrition was just easy, it's not like we need to tackle everything as if we were to graduate as nutritionists, but rather just the overview of how various foods and factors such as metabolism and environment can affect the nutrition of an individual. 

Getting to know this lesson wasn't just learning it as an academic subject area but also being aware of the relevant issues we have especially in the Philippines. Health malnutrition among children is still very timely and relevant to our country and even in other countries such like Africa and other countries with poor economy and high poverty rate. Being aware in this issue gives us understanding concerning various factors that could affect one's nutrition and it gives light on how we could innovate and how we could provide something as the youth in order to help and arise those in below for them to see the silver lining in everything.

Now, this is when I said that biology is now warming up. If you may have recall, I may say that biology isn't the field I am best at. Although still learning, it takes me a long time to process the information being taught. However, considering the confusions I got along the discussion of lesson, I managed to get all the necessary concepts when I was answering my module.

The cell cycle encompasses the three processes of interphase, cell division, and cytokinesis. The interphase consists of the stages of the 1st cell growth, synthesis, and the 2nd cell growth. Meanwhile, the second process of the cell cycle, cell division is categorized into two namely mitosis and meiosis wherein each category both undergoes the same stages of prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase, the only difference is that mitosis does it twice. Mitosis is the cell division taking place in the body for recovery, regeneration, and growth of the tissues, organs, and the whole organism itself. On the other hand, meiosis' main significance is to produce or divide sex cells to produce gametes with different biological information. And lastly, cytokinesis is the final stage of the cell cycle where in the cytoplasm of the cell divides making two new cells. Basically, those are the basic concepts and information I learnt and that's how I would explain it in my terms.

Although this was easy yet confusing I still enjoyed learning it. Genetics has its whole program in college yet we are tackling it, but of course only giving a glimpse of the overview of the whole concept of the Mendelian genetics. Being able to tell the various information I needed to process and keep in my mind, I still lack rapid understanding of the lesson. Some confusions were made at first but as the journey of learning continues, I was getting used to how the concepts work especially in monohybrid and dihybrid crossing which is extremely easy to understand.

Speaking of monohybrid and dihybrid crossing, let us discuss how I understood each element. A monohybrid cross is defined as the cross happening in the first filial generation offspring of parents differing in one trait only. A dihybrid cross is a cross that have happened in the first filial generation offspring of differing in two traits producing the second filial generation also differing in two traits. That is the main and basic concept that I have learned all throughout the path of tackling yet also still carrying other important details that comes along with it such as the use Punnett square.

In making hypothesis of how many offspring will inherit a certain trait of the parents, it wasn't a bit hard as I have tested all of my hypothesis and they vary from 0.7 to 0.9 which I think is already close to the exact observation of 1.0. I first got to assess how many percent of the whole offspring has the possibility to produce that certain trait. And I multiply those percent to 100 to get the number of offspring that will be produced with the same trait in a scope of 100 offspring only. For instance, the dominant trait appeared 75%of the offspring and the recessive trait appeared 25%. Therefore, my hypothesis will be there will be 75 offspring having the dominant trait and 25 offspring having the recessive trait in a scope of 100 produced offspring. Now, we have talked about biodiversity and the levels of organization.

As simple as it sounds, Biodiversity  is just simply coined  from  the  words,  biological  diversity. Tackling also the history, Aristotle was considered as the first ever taxonomist. He was considered as one and as the first because he first has the idea or at least proposed the idea of the classifications of the biodiversity involving humans, plants, and animals. Elaborating taxonomy, taxonomy was initially based on physical characteristics. Scientists of the past did not have access to the genetic technology we possess today. When we group species based on physical similarities alone, we call it artificial classification. Another concept in biodiversity is biological classification wherein it is  the  arrangement  of  organisms  into  groups  and  subgroups  on  the  basis  of  meaningful 
similarities and differences. Those groups are then ranked by size. Another concept, Taxonomic hierarchy is the ranking of the different groups, or taxa, that organisms are classified into. These taxa are ranked from large/general (i.e., kingdom) to small/specific (i.e., species). The arrangement of classification of organisms from the most specified to the most general starts from species, genus, family, order, class, phylum, to kingdom. 

Well, that was all just the basic learnings and key concepts that I have learned so far in biodiversity. Learning and understanding is certainly hard for me as it requires a vast memorization of key concepts and there are so much information to process.

This new week of Biodiversity, we have learned about the nature of biodiversity as an extension to the discussions last week, but this week, some new ideas, such as the fundamental elements in an ecosystem, the introduction of the Biotic Factor and Abiotic Factor, and the many definitions, and others have been strengthened. In addition to the emphasis on biodiversity, the discussions on cladistics also began later. It's somehow associated with Phylogenetics as the subject is about organism history, but it's two distinct things altogether. Finally we have emphasized, besides Cladistics and the latter, the fields and kingdoms of the taxonomic classification of organisms. It consists of the three domains: the Eukarya, the Bacteria and the Archea, one or more of which are commonly recognized in the six kingdoms today. The six kingdoms – Protista, Archaebacteria, Eubacteria, Fungi, Plantae, Animalia – emphasize their cell type, cell number, feeding type and reproductive modes. In addition, the lesson was further discussed with explanations and extra material. Overall, it was a major and long lesson, but to learn more still remains interesting. I have also understood that ecology is the biological branch that deals with organisms' interactions with the environment. All the members in a particular region are included in the population. We also remember the organizational level utilized to demonstrate the interaction of organisms with one other and the environment. The organizational level comprises atoms, cells, tissues, organs, organ systems,  organisms, population, community,  ecosystems, biome,  and the biosphere. We defined biomes as kinds of ecosystems characterized by dominating vegetation. We also assessed if which enviormentment or ecosystem is with high or low biodiversity. Moreover, invasive species are non-native organism species in a rapidly reproducing habitat. I have also learnt that all the combined ecosystems make up the biosphere and so you can understand how wide the biosphere is encompassing every living and non-living thing that sustain life. The food chain is also significant to the biosphere as it sustain the different species of organisms with the energy they needed to survive, one species to be affected, the whole food chain will be greatly impacted and may even lead to the instance of breaking. As application to my learnings, I must apply what I've learnt in the topic of biodiversity and ecosystem in solving various environmental problems and issues the world is facing today. These solutions could leave a great impact to the world in terms of its economy and identity.
