Nauru Declares State of Emergency

The small pacific island nation of Nauru declares 'state of emergency' on March 17th as a preventative measure to the Coronavirus pandemic. The island is home to over 200 refugees and asylum seekers remanded in Australian offshore processing centres. This drastic measure calls into question the safety of the detained people and demonstrates the lack of empathy and sense of responsibility Australian Government displays towards Asylum seekers. Nauru is tiny island that will already struggle to provide medical care and attention for its own citizens, it is easy to see that foreigners who the Australian government pays to put there will not be a priority if COVID-19 hits the region.

On April 17 the Malaysian government refused to allow two boats carrying between 200 and 500 Rohingya refugees aboard to seek asylum in their state. The government has been accused of using Covid-19 as an excuse to blatantly violate international laws and their humanitarian obligations. Malaysia's home minister also stated that his Government did not officially recognise refugees, including those from the Rohingya community, and said that they remained "illegal immigrants in the eyes of Malaysian law". (Lim 2020) This statement comes after the state has already accepted 101,584 thousand Rohingya refugees in the past, the only difference is that these boats landed during a global pandemic and the Malaysian government is using this as a loophole to violate international law and ultimately fail these vulnerable people.

The largest refugee camp in the world has recorded its first 2 cases of the deadly virus COVID-19 on May 14th. Cox's Bazar camp is located in Bangladesh and houses almost 1 million Rohingya Refugees that have been there since 2017 after they were forced to flee their home country of Myanmar due to military persecution and systematic violence towards their community. According to the ABC article (2020), there are between 40,000 and 70,000 people living per square kilometre within the camp. We have seen thousands of people die from the virus in wealthy western states who have access to healthcare and good hygiene practices, it is concerning to think of the consequences and loss of life that would occur if COVID-19 was to spread through this refugee camp.

The United Nations has requested the Croatian government launch an investigation into allegations of abuse carried out by border police against asylum seekers crossing the Croatian border from Bosnia. The article stipulated that officers spray painted their heads, took their shoes and belongings, in a cruel tactic of humiliation and psychological abuse towards the vulnerable refugees and migrants crossing the border. This is not the first time border protection officers in the region have been accused of police brutality and the abuse of power, with the Bosnian border often referred to as the most tough in Europe. It is often speculated that this show of unnecessary force and brutality is to demonstrate to the European Union the ability of Croatia to protect its borders, and gain respect from neighbouring counties who often struggle with illegal immigrants entering.
