Do children under the age of ten need cell phones?

These days the entire world is experiencing an unprecedented transition from physical to digital ways of connection regarding work, education, and social relationships. It is nothing new that children under the age of 10 are a substantial part of this shift, but the effect in the long term is worrying both scientists and parents - and rightly so.

Firstly, the digital world can be either a way of entertainment and learning, with the online games and digital activities, or an unsecure space where privacy and legal protection for child’s rights are frequently infringed. I think the latter is the kernel of the issue. All children should be under guidance when they need to use the internet. And, in my opinion, there are no reasons at all for a child to have his/her/their own cell phone. In contrast, some people say that there is no big deal.

In addition, the lack of physical social relationships with friends, e. g. in the school, in the playground etc., and its replacement with digital connection may lead to sleep and behavioral problems. I think that the digital solutions to shorten distances are paramount, but its use by children unsupervised is a risk for both health and protection of rights. For example, a video call to play an online game together is a good choice provided that the children are safe from a third part intrusion. Parents, guardians, and the society itself have the responsibility to respect and protect them.

To sum up, I disagree with the idea to give a cell phone to a child under the age of ten. It does not mean that the use of the internet itself should be forbidden as it has some benefits. But the thing is: all children, no matter the age, really needs to be protected and supervised, specially in the digital world.

Mario Cesar Lobo Junior

These days we say that the internet has the power to connect people, we can send messages and talk to people virtually anywhere in the world almost instantly, on the other hand the technology can bring us some harm such as: getting fat, altered vision, reduced sleep time, sedentary lifestyle and depression. So, it would be good to rethink how good the internet is for our lives.

After thinking about it, some people decide to have one day off from the internet a week. I think this is an interesting idea because sometimes we get so connected that even on a rest day we can get tired if we keep sending messages, on the social media or checking our email. The effects of overuse of the internet can be even worse for children.

I believe that children under 10 years old can use the internet, but this must happen with parental supervision and especially with a limited amount of time, but this situation is even more difficult if parents can’t control the time that themselves spending on the internet.

To sum up, I believe that most people spend a lot of time on the internet and that we should rethink the amount of time that we spend, because we may be missing out on wonderful things that are happening in the real world.

Ana Paula Simões

These days, there are many different apps that can help to communicate, search, work, study, share information and ideas. I think most young people spend more time on smartphones than doing anything in real life.

Firstly, many people have an addiction to social media, they can’t spend a day without a quick look at your Instagram, YouTube, Whatsapp, Facebook, Pinterest and others. The social media has some strengths, it is like a tool that can help you to move, communicate, publicize your jobs and a lot of other things. Have you ever thought about how social media can be toxic in our society? This means the side effects of it and over consumption of your users. Every day, when we open the apps, we can see fake news, fake people, hate speech and other subjects capable of generating feelings of anxiety or dissatisfaction.

In addition, there is a documentary on Netflix called “The Social Dillema”. This documentary explores the impact of social networking with tech experts alarming about their own creations. They show how the designers created and have control over billions of people, and how the app can manipulate, polarize, distract, monetize, divide and control the human race. I believe it's a great documentary about how apps can hold our attention.

To sum up, I think that users of social media need to reflect how much influence it has in your life.

In our modern world, we can face the benefits from having a social media which connects you with all the people you met. But can we still connect with them even if you are not into social media?

In this way, people are used to share their lives in social media and particularly stuff from it that in other time wouldn't be possible. This can make people feel intimate or even closer to each other.

Currently is hard to find someone that doesn't have a smartphone or a way to connect to the internet. Known as the miracle of the modern world, the net is full of wonders that would not be possible without it, like being able to talk to people on the other side of the world in real time, to find good reads without leaving the house or even to be able to shop anything you want to be ship to your home. But day after day is come to notice the bad side of iy.

Since the internet was invented in the war and
just realease to the public when the government notice how much finacial
possibilities it has, is no surprise that there is a bad side. One big news
about it was how companies and the government itself used ours data to control
without our consent. Most people are not aware how bad this is, for example.
with it they control the information sent to us in a way which can make us
believe in things or became unaware of things that we usually wouldn't. And also,
the data is use to sell not only ideas but also products, because with the
knowledge of the way we think the advertisement we'll recieve most likely will
interest us more than the ones without out this knowledge.

In contradiction, there are great things about the loveble internet. Because of it, people are able to share images, videos, audios, and messages all around the world, it has made the world seems so much smaller than it is, also the amount of content we can find about all sort áreas of knowledge. In my opinion in this current pandemic was prove the potential of it with the online classes, online books, apps for learning or just gathering with friends.

To sum up, I believe the internet has more good than bad, here I’m talking of hope most, because with the use of it as a tool make us able to do amazing things in the world, for example sharing ideas, but we need to don’t be naive about it, since there will be always the things mention on the second paragraph. We need to become more conscious about the use of it so we can make a better world to ourselves.

Andie S.

Since the rise of the internet techology, we have never been so connected to the virtual world as we are now. These days, people use internet to watch movies and tv shows, to listen to musics, to send messages, to play games, etc. Not to mention about the internet of things. I think this makes our lives more confortable, and practical. But there are also negative sides of that use that the world is becoming more aware in the last years.

Firstly, this constant connection to the internet can makes people lose the connection to the real world. For example, accidents due to distraction provocated by the use of cellphones in the streets become more common. Concernings about this spending time online led the own companies to develop mechanisms able to count the time you spend using some app. For instance, Facebook, Instagram, iOS, etc.

In addition, many people understood the problem of being connected all time and embraced the idea of reducing this kind of lifestyle. These people fight against the harmful way that apps interact with them. So that, they decide to turn off apps notifications to the maximum possible, to verify their e-mails just in a specific time of their days, to delete some social medias of their lifes, among others things. Other people can think that is a too negative way of facing the internet use, but I disagree. In my opinion, these people are trying to taking the reins up of their lives again.

To sum up, I believe that Internet is a wonderful tool to improve our personal and profissional lives. But we must know how to use it in a healthy way. The secret is to know how to balance the things. We cannot be prisoners of the virtual world.

Anderson

In these days, the word cringe won a special place on internet and a polemic between the called Millennials (1980-1994) and Z generation (1995-2010). The subject run out the internet. On TV News, for instance, the polemic was explained for the televiewer. On the classes students and teachers talked about be or not be cringe. Artists posted their opinions on social medias.

Be a cringe, means do something considered corny or depressive, tell us Matheus Pichonneli from UOL News. A list of actions needs be verified to know if you are a cringe. A cringe does things like to pay “boletos”, to talk about Friends, to say “I will drink a big litter”, to be Harry Potter fan or wear a skinny pants. You are a cringe if you use “rsrs” in WhatsApp or add a hashtag in subtitles. The strangest thing in the list is to like coffee or a breakfast. Of course, is not need be a Millennial to eat breakfast.

The Brazilian comedian Leandro Hassum made a post on Instagram. He said, “I pooped for cringe”, “Go find what to do”. About to pay a bank slip, an article in NuBank Blog shows who the Z Generations also pay “boletos” and do not know do financial investments, letting their money in savings accounts.

To sum up, I am also a millennial and obviously a cringe too. I believe the conflicts between generations always have been happening. Probably this is just a joke between kids and parents. And so fast it came so fast it goes. Like everything in internet.

Nowadays, we can talk to other people all the time by phone calls or just by sending them some voice messages. But is that voice other people receive on their phones really our voice?

Firstly, we have to understand how the phone record the sounds. When we talk the air between you and the listener start to vibrate in the same way as your vocal chords. It means that the phone need to record this vibration and them transmit them thru the internet or the phone lines.

In addition, the smartphones don’t really hear us, it creates a lot of sound waves in the software. We call that waves the white noise or white frequency, and when we talk the smartphone transmits the difference between your voice and the white noise. So you don’t really hear your voice on the phone, but the difference between your voice and the base on the software.

To sum up, you could make a nice experiment to see this difference using two smartphones, recording and sending the same audio from one smartphone to another again and again. At some point you will only hear the white noise.

Paulo Ed

Nowadays, technology is intrinsically linked to the daily lives of humans, bringing practicality and comfort to users. However, this same practicality is brought to children by the guardians, where children use technology for studies and entertainment. Does this youth contact affect children's development?

First, it is necessary to reaffirm that during the Covid 19 quarantine, online study was essential in the role of educating young people, but with it, many lost basic principles such as coexistence and socialization, which effects will be observed in a few years.

In addition, many guardians chose to give their children smartphones, both for studies and for fun. However, when making such a decision, the person responsible often does not follow what their child is doing on their cell phone, and whether the content is compatible with their age. In addition, the sedentary lifestyle among this new generation has reached frightening levels, making an entire generation possibly undeveloped physically.

To sum up, while technology helps a child's intellectual development, it inhibits physical development, causing children to spend more time sitting than necessary. Therefore, it can be said that the child should not have a smartphone until he is 10 years old, so that the parents can control the child's technology consumption time.

Ana Silvia Mendes

With the incoming of smartphones, connection became part of human beings' lives. However, do we really need all this time we spend on the web? Besides, we need to ask ourserlves what we do when using it.

The day has 24 hours, and we need 8 of them to sleep. So people spend almost half of their daytime connected. From all this time, a huge part is fulled by social media, games and all kind of stuff made, all of them, with a final purpose: keep you online the most possible. That's because the most time you spend using thier platforms, the most data they have from you. With this data, they earn money.

As it has happened with the food industry in the last decades, companies don't hesitate in exploring our feeling of pleasure, captivating our attention and stimulating consumism. But it generates side effects in people's health. Because of industrialized food, a lot of metabolic issues became epidemic, such as diabetes. Now, with companies exploring people's pleasure with internet content, mental health issues are becoming epidemic.

If you will to have a better control of your behaviour on social media and games, there are some options of help. One of them are apps that calculate the time you spend on each app of your smartphone. There you have the option of limitating your screentime on an app you are willing to get off.

samir
