Three practice I would like to incorporate into my classroom to ensure it is more accessible would be:

1. Speech-to-Text Tools:
This is my tech solution. The article highlights tools like Google Docs Voice Typing or Dragon Dictation to help students who struggle with handwriting or fine motor skills. I would like to have a designated space for students to quietly use voice typing and make it a standard option for written assignments, reducing stigma and giving everyone more flexibility.

2. Use Visual Timers and Flexible Seating
Visual timers can help students, especially those with certain disabilities, understand how much time remains during tasks. Offering multiple options for seating, that all look and feel different, (stools, cushions, carpet squares or beanbags) can support students’ sensory needs and keep them engaged.

3.Provide Closed Captions
Turning on captions for videos benefits students who are deaf or hard of hearing and helps everyone improve reading and listening skills.

1. What three things might you do in your future classroom to make it more accessible?

a. Provide multiple ways for students to access content (UDL principle: Representation).

I would make sure that lessons are available in different formats—such as visuals, videos, written outlines, and audio recordings. For example, I could record mini-lectures or provide skeletal outlines before class, allowing students with different learning needs to prepare in advance.

b. Use technology to expand student expression and participation.

Not all students are comfortable speaking in front of the class. I could incorporate tools like discussion boards, blogs, or video submissions, allowing students to demonstrate their knowledge in multiple ways. This aligns with the video’s point that design should allow independence and dignity for people with different abilities. Technology can level the playing field and make participation more inclusive.

c. Build the physical and digital environment with accessibility in mind.

Drawing from the video, I would pay attention to small but powerful design choices—like contrasting colors on slides, easy-to-read fonts, and classroom layouts that allow mobility aids. I’d also integrate assistive technology highlighted in the Edutopia article (e.g., speech-to-text, text-to-speech tools, or captioned media), which benefits not only students with disabilities but all learners.

After thinking about some actions I can take to making my future classroom more accessible for students, I have come up with three ideas.

Understanding the needs of my students

Making an effort to understand what students needs are and how I as a teacher can meet those needs is extremely important to teaching. Recognizing what students needs are can vary depending on the students personal learning plan. Changing instruction presentation depending on students needs is beneficial to their learning and conceptualization of information.

creating flexible seating for children to use while instruction is happening.

Allowing students to have various seating arrangements can help students focus more during instruction times in class. Flexible seating arrangements can increase student engagement and motivation in class by allowing them to make choices for their learning.

utilizing assistive technology

Recognizing if students need additional support with technology can be beneficial to their success in learning. Resources like speech-to-text software can help students with hearing impairments who might lack support.

I think it is important for all children to be able to learn in the way that best helps them succeed, and making sure they have a way to learn is important to me.

2) As someone with social anxiety, I know it is hard to sometimes collaborate with peers or work in front of peers due to the fear of being judged. I think using technology can help students be able to share their opinions and ideas through different tools like discussion posts, group homework online, possible even zoom. This way, there is a way for all people with anxiety to also get some help.

3) Captions for those hard of hearing or tools for student's to listen to work if they are hard of seeing or reading! This can ensure all students, who may all have different needs or disabilities, are able to learn in an effective way.

I plan to use Closed Captions in my classroom. I ideally would like to use a lot of documentaries to help support my teaching practices so that my students will have access to the most historical knowledge available in my class. With movies and documentaries, They can sometimes be hard to understand and can even be interrupted by other students. With this in mind, using closed captions would be a great way to optimize times so that even when disruptions or something that is a bit harder to understand happens then the students can still understand with the assistance of captions.

I plan to use speech to text during my lectures. With some students zoning out and being hard of hearing it is important that I use speech to text. This will make it easier for students to follow along during my lectures and allow them to take more detailed notes so that they may have the best chance of success in my class. This will also allow me to record the information I have discussed and allow me to save it so that I may both improve on my past lectures as well as provide the transcript for students who may have missed class that day.

I plan to use Graphic organizers as a way to layout my classroom. This will help layout my classwork so that students who have difficulties learning may succeed in my class along with providing assistance to students who may struggle with reading. A graphic organizer will layout things in a way that will help those who suffer from dysgraphia and other disabilities that deal with fine motor skills and learning. A graphic organizer is a must have, no-technology assistance method in the classroom.

Whatever a student is able to focus best in is what will work for me. I know that sitting in the same chair all day can be difficult so I want to give them the option to change up their day.

Visual timers are so beneficial to keep students not feel as if they are working aimlessly. They can physically see the end goal and it can be a great motivator.

Closed captions can help students that are hard of hearing.

Lighting and Sounds:

I will have "mood" lighting in my classroom. When students should be awake and attentive, the lighting and sounds will reflect that. When students should be quiet (nap time), lights will be low and sounds will not be over-stimulating.

Flexible Seating:

I will have flexible seating and an array of seat options for students to move around in at certain points in time. Because I plan to teach preschoolers, this will look different than an older classroom. I will have mat seating, floor seating, and chairs-maybe table chairs and another option, so they are able to stay engaged and attentive to the lessons.

Organization of Classroom:

I will have a very organized classroom with different stations and spots for specific activities. For example, having a sensory table or bin, individual play boxes with different materials, an art station, and more. This will allow students to have a choice in which materials they want to use at certain times, while also learning how to be responsible for their items and choosing things that will help them stay creative.

Differentiated Instruction: I believe as a teacher in my classroom it is crucial to provide differentiated instruction so all students are able to learn and show their understanding in the best way for themselves. Everyone processes and learns thing differently and I don't think as a teacher it is fair to assume all students can learn and express themselves in the same way so providing different tools for students to learn with and then show their learning through whether in homework or exams is a great way to incorporate UDL into your inclusive classroom.

Visual Timers: I think using visual timers in my classroom would be really helpful for students. Not only will this help students work on their time management skills but this makes students independent time more purposeful when they know they have a certain amount of time they need to complete something in. Visual timers pulled up on the computer and projected onto a screen huge with a bright color makes it very clear to the students the expectation.

Flexible Seating: I think offering flexible seating in my classroom would be really beneficial for most students especially ones that deal with ADHD. Most kids have a hard time sitting down, not moving, and focusing for a long period of time so flexible seating like providing kids to sit on wobbly chairs or to use standing desks allows for them to stay focused on doing their work while accommodating their physical and sensory needs.

1. One of the ways I plan to make my classroom more accessible is making sure that there are captions on video media or by trying to get transcripts of the media if it’s needed. I know this helps me in my everyday life while watching TV or doing assignments for school, and it is a very easy and free way to make sure everyone can get everything out of the media.

2. A second way is by using flexible seating in my classroom. By giving students multiple ways to sit and get comfortable, you are giving them a chance to focus on the lesson instead of their discomfort. Flexible seating includes seats that move or are in quieter parts of the classroom. This really captures the idea that every student is different and has different needs in order to give you their best effort at school.

3. A final way is by using visual timers for assignments and testing. A visual timer is a great way to assist students who need preparation for transitions between activities or need help with their time management. It is easy and free to add to your slides, and it is inexpensive to have a physical one as well.

One thing that I will do in my classroom is to have flexible seating. This gives students the opportunity to move around during activities and let them choose a seat that will help enhance their learning. This would include different chair options including swivel chairs, bouncy balls and chairs with straps on the bottom so students can fidget if it helps them learn.

Speech to text tools are really helpful in a classroom as my tech solution. I have an instructor that does this in class and it is very helpful. Whatever she says to the class, the words show up in text on the board. Using voice typing tools can help make the lesson mare accessible, and it can also make doing your work more efficient.

Lighting in the classroom is also something I find to be very effective. I was in a first grade classroom the other day and I was absolutely amazed at how well the children were paying attention and how engaged they were in the content. The teacher mentioned that they respond really well to the lighting changes in the classroom. The classroom was more dim with natural lighting and string lights, which made the student super focused.

Three things I would like to add to my classroom for accessibility would be:

I have one teacher now that had speech-to-text subtitles on the screen, so that if you cannot hear what she is saying, you can at least read it. I think this is great for students and could be even more helpful for ELA students if you could find a way to translate it into their first language, depending on their needs in the classroom.

I think that having Padlet boards is a great way to get thoughts out to the classroom for some students who may be shy. I remember being quiet in school because I was scared to talk during class, but having resources that students can use as their voice could be super helpful to get their thoughts on topics or if they have questions on assignments.

Incorporating different styles of teaching into my lessons will help all of my students by targeting everyone's needs and learning styles.

One of my closest friends has a hard time reading. This has been a challenge for him for as long as I can remember being friends with him. Because of this I would like to make sure that in my history lectures I include lots of visual aids and word organizers. Because history is a very word and date oriented subject I wouldn't just want to throw a bunch of close together small writing up on the board for students to try and copy. It is not very exciting or engaging, and can really be hard for students with reading disabilities to process.

I would also like to video tape all of my lectures so that students are able to go back and listen to them at any given point. I myself find this to be one of the most helpful things that professors do in college. I often struggle with keeping up with writing down notes while simultaneously actually engaging with in class content. This way students could give their full attention in class and go back and jot down notes if that is a problem for them. Sometimes just hearing information twice is nice.

I would like to incorporate many links in whatever website we use, whether that be blackboard or canvas. I would try to post fun engaging material that relates to whatever history topic we are on. This could help students have additional background info to put more of the pieces of the puzzle together for the class content and help them draw their own connections. It could also be rewarding for inquisitive history students who want to dig deeper than just my lectures.

Three things that I would add to a future classroom to make it more accessible for students are:

1. Post all course materials, beyond what is required, into a course management system. If students have questions about any materials previously provided such as lectures, videos, worksheets, or readings they are able to easily access this again for clarification.

2. Visual timers are also a useful tool to help keep yourself and your students organized. For students who may become easily stressed when transitioning between activities in the classroom, this also provides them with the visual ability to see when a change is going to happen.

3. I will also be intentional about turning on closed captioning when showing videos within my classroom. I have found, even with my peers, this allows for quicker understanding from everyone.

Three things I hope to add in my classroom are:

I want to incorporate different activities that support all learning types. Since every student learns differently, I hope to find different teaching methods that work for specific learning styles.

I plan to use technology as a way to help students better understand a topic. I think some programs are very helpful and go through different activities to promote understanding of the topic. Offering programs such as audiobooks and text-to-speech would help students who have trouble reading, speaking, and writing. Some students will only comprehend a book by hearing it.

I plan to provide all resources to students for the whole year. This will allow them to go back and look at other topics they may have struggled with. Creating a class Google Drive with all the material, PowerPoint, study guides, guided notes, etc. Students will be able to study with the material given by me, which is created to support their learning.

Along with this I would attempt to have technology available in the classroom for students who cannot access technology at home.

I would like to make some kind of corner or space within the classroom for students to take a break and have a moment to calm down if they are feeling stressed or overwhelmed. This might include some fun books, fidgets, or coloring activities. It would be a comfy spot with a fun chair or two and some pillows.

Lastly, I would like to have a schedule for students to look at when they need it. This would include a schedule on the board for daily use as well as a printed schedule for the week or month. I feel like this is beneficial for students because they get to know what comes next in their learning.
