I would like to shout out my Clinical Supervisor at my internship for lifting me up this year. She has been so understanding and supportive while I've been in my program. It is so refreshing to finally be heard and seen as a student learning in the field.

I would also like to shout out professor Bryce Hudak for providing a knowledgeable, manageable, and interesting course in my SWCL705 (Clinical SW with Addictive Behavioral Patterns). I have learned so much in his course as well as being able to apply it in my field placement.

What experience transformed your perspective? 

Last semester (Spring 2024), I was hospitalized at the end of the semester due to my mental health. Starting this program I thought I could challenge myself and do it all by working 3 part time jobs, internship, and take in person classes. By the end of the year I was so burnt out and overwhelmed I knew I needed to seek help. That experience, shifted my perspective to focus more on my self-care and be mindful of my time so I do not end up the way I did in the past. Learning not to take on many task/roles, if I cannot manage.

What quiet act of kindness restored your faith? 

My clinical supervisor, professors, health care team, and friends saving space for me to vent or acknowledge how I am feeling was a quiet act of kindness that restored my faith in SW and life.

What connection reminded you why you do this work?

Honestly, the political outcomes of this years presidency reminded me why I want to become a social worker. It reminded me that I am passionate for Women's rights, immigration, and basic humanity. I cut many people out of my life this year to protect my peace and follow my values. I am reminded of the social justice work incorporate in social work and how I plan to advocate for the women, immigrants, LGBTQ+, adolescents, and SU community.

As a first-year foundational online student at the School of Social Work, returning to college life after many years, I deeply needed both encouragement and support. I am especially grateful to Professor Kimberly, whose inspiring notes on my graded papers lifted me up and motivated me to keep pushing forward. Her thoughtful words made a lasting impact on me.

I also want to extend my heartfelt thanks to Dr. Dawn Shafer for organizing and creating a space for us to reflect and be heard during the First Gen Scholars events. These events have provided invaluable support and encouragement throughout the school year. I am deeply appreciative of everyone who has made this journey a meaningful and uplifting experience.
