In this scene, Dominguez is talking with Eddie and at first Eddie seems annoyed with Dominguez because of how optomistic he is. Dominguez then begins to talk about how he is going to take his wife to Mexico, and Eddie decides to give Dominguez money to spend on his wife. This moment with Dominguez shows the layers of Eddie's complex character. It reveals his genuine kindness and generosity, showing us that despite his rough around the edges attitude, he's got a heart of gold. He cares deeply for others, and it's these quiet acts of compassion that really define who he is. (Page 6)

Through out the beggining of the book it is made clear that Eddie is very old and bitter, but has a warm place in his heart for children. So when Eddie is faced with the choice of saving himself or this random girl at the pier he doesnt hesitate to save her. Eddie's act of sacrificing his life for a little girl he doesn't even know really shows his selflessness and bravery. It shows what kind of character he is since he'd put someone elses life that he doesnt even know above his own without a second thought. It also shows his instinct to protect and serve others.

in the second person Eddie meets in heaven is his former war captain. This encounter is pivotal for Eddie as it reveals the circumstances surrounding his leg injury and the emotional burden he carried from the war. The Captain teaches Eddie about sacrifice and forgiveness, showing him that the act of selflessness during war led to unintended consequences but also saved lives. It's a profound moment of understanding for Eddie, as he learns the interconnectedness of life's events and the impact of his own actions. This meeting helps Eddie to release his anger and guilt, bringing him closer to peace.

This quote speaks to the idea that when one chapter of our lives closes, another one begins, often without our awareness. It suggests that what we perceive as an ending is merely a transition to a new phase, filled with possibilities we may not yet see. It's a reminder that life is an adventure, and every conclusion is the start of a new adventure.

This quote is said when Eddie is talking to the third person Ruby about him and his father’s relationship. The quote means that staying angry at someone hurts you more than it hurts them. It's described as drinking poison and expecting the other person to get sick. It gives us insight into the internal struggles Eddie faces, rather than moving the story forward.

This quote happens shortly after Ruby tells Eddie about how hatred is poison, and she uses another example to portray her view of hate. This quote dives deep into the idea that hate isn't a straight shooter. It's like a boomerang that ends up coming back to hit you. The quote is about how a person's negative feelings can end up hurting themselves more than anyone else.

In this scene Ruby is telling Eddie about what really happened between Eddies dad and Mickey. This quote is trying to say that sometimes when people act on impulse because they believe it is right it may not always be the right thing to do because our impulse can change as time goes on.
