Through out the beggining of the book it is made clear that Eddie is very old and bitter, but has a warm place in his heart for children. So when Eddie is faced with the choice of saving himself or this random girl at the pier he doesnt hesitate to save her. Eddie's act of sacrificing his life for a little girl he doesn't even know really shows his selflessness and bravery. It shows what kind of character he is since he'd put someone elses life that he doesnt even know above his own without a second thought. It also shows his instinct to protect and serve others.
