His ship had some damage so he stopped to get some repairs. The other 4 ships appeared to keep traveling West and never heard of again. Some believe they hit a rough storm and capsized. Cabot lead his exploration now with only 1 boat. In 1499, Cabot was presumed dead in the Atlantic Ocean.
