Summary:
The boy is not allowed to say Emperor's name but he occasionally does it after passing the guards. While traveling in the desert, the boy starts dreaming about riding the white horse. Also, he had a dream about Japanese black ships that Emperor sent to help them.
Significant passages:
"The ships had sailed all the way from the other side of the ocean. The emperor himself had sent them." (Otsuka 53)
'...three black ships..." (Otsuka 53)
"..he was riding an enormous white horse by the sea."(Otsuka 53)
Analysis
I feel like boy sees an Emperor as an enemy for him because he describes the ships as black (but actually they are not).

Summary:
In his dreams, there is a door behind another door that hides a picture of the Emperor. No one is allowed to look into his eyes because he is divine, a god. A boy describes a door like a really beautiful but very small. Every time he reaches to open the door, something goes wrong.
Significant passages:
"The beautiful wooden door was very small." (Otsuka 73)
"Only something always went wrong." (Otsuka 73)
"Emperor was holy and divine. A god." (Otsuka 73)
Analysis:
He is trying to connect with the Emperor and open the door but every time he tries to do it, he fails.

Summary:
The boy imagines different ways how his father is going to come home.
Significant passages:
"Did you get my letters?" (Otsuka 105)
"I thought of you too." (Otsuka 105)
"I have returned." (Otsuka 104)
"Tell me everything" (Otsuka 105)
Analysis:
The boy shows us how much does he miss his father by creating different scenarios of him coming home. He hopes that his father still cares about him. He wants to talk to him because he needs someone to comfort him.

In all of these passages, the boy is trying to find a powerful figure that he wants to follow. Firstly he dreams about ships that imperor sent himself. Then he dreams about the door that he never can open. He dreames about things that are not letting him do it. He does the same with his father while talking about how he is going to get to him "He could come back on a horse. On a bike. In a train. On a plane." He dreams about talking to him and telling about all problems that he had.
