This was directly refuting the clergy's statement that the demonstrations were violent and not peaceful. In multiple places he talked about how he only stood for actions that were peaceful. His purpose was to create change without resorting to violence.

He knows that if he acts emotionally or is belligerant, it gives people an excuse to write him off. I am so impressed at how he uses this understanding to his advantage. For example, he agrees with the clergymen's call for negotiation, but feels the actions being taken are the only way for negotiations to actually start.

For 340 years the legislation and attitudes of society have been demonizing and dehumanizing of black people. I will never be able to understand the intergenerational trauma and heartbreak that that has lead to. I also think that how he compared America’s progress to other countries’. This shows to Americans that even the “poor third world countries” that many believe America is better than are progressing faster.
