Faculty support was very important to my involvement; their mentorship encouraged me to stay involved.

6. Involvement tied me to campus as more than a student; I was invested in more than just my studies--making me a stronger student.

1. I was very involved as a student, very seriously in three student organizations. I also worked in two different offices in undergrad.

2. Yes, I work full-time while attending classes. I wish I could be more involved with our program's student organization. I regularly attend campus activities, as a grad student and not an employee.

6. Yes, it's super important for students to stay plugged in. It helps them feel connected, while forming meaningful relationships/networks. It's a great tool for support.

4. When answering this question, I think it is important to look at the campus demographics and acknowledge that community colleges are commuter campuses and most students are working part to full time jobs. Because community colleges funnel students into trades/professions or four year institutions, they need to be more efficient than entertaining. I think it's important that students be fully engaged in classes and have access to all the resources they need to be personally healthy and academically successful.

6. My answer to this depends on how you define involvement. I'll answer from an extracurricular/club/etc perspective. I think the importance of involvement depends on the student and their priorities. There are students who attend purely for class and the importance of the 'college experience' is outweighed by their personal commitments and responsibilities. Trying to rope students into university activities that don't align with their priorities is counterproductive.

7. I think it is important that faculty maintain a visible presence on campus and are accessible to students for academic support. I do think it is helpful for students to know that they are able to speak with faculty on a personal level if needed and that the faculty are aware of resources that can assist students.

4. Yes. I believe the community college system struggles with involvement because of the demographics. Working students, single parents and high school students taking classes make up a large number of community college students. This makes it difficult for a sustained engagement outside of class.

6. I definitely think that involvement is critical for success in college because it gives students an outlet that is outside of the classroom. It helps them develop relationships and networks for success.
1. I joined community groups and choir and it helped me develop lasting relationships.

1. I went to different club/student organization fairs that were hosted by my institution. But I mostly was involved with Housing as an RA.
3. Yes I wish I would have been more involved in undergrad, but I was working and also took 16+ hours each semester so I couldn't. I also knew that many clubs on campus costs $40 or more per semester and I couldn't afford that.
4. Community Colleges struggle tremendously with involvement because the majority of students do not live on campus nor are on campus for an extended amount of time. They are also majority non-traditional students so they do not feel as though involvement is important for their collegiate experience.

1. I got involved in my undergrad by connecting with people through my residence hall and classes. From there, I joined clubs and developed a social group.

7. I believe faculty involvement is essential to student success. The more the faculty can communicate about different ways to connect, the more likely students are to engage. I got connected to one of my friends as an undergrad through tutoring (referenced by faculty).

8. I think public 4-year universities have the most student involvement opportunities because of the lifestyle of the students (having more free time) and because these universities get a lot of funding.

1. I was very involved as an undergraduate. I began in space I felt the most comfortable. I joined the NAACP organization and found a home there. I also worked on campus as Desk Assistant in Housing which began a career that I know love as a Hall Director.

3. Community colleges are made up of a slightly different population of students. Often these students have many outside obligations preventing them from getting involved as they might at a 4 year institution.

6. Involvement is extremely important to feeling at home on a college campus. Involvement adds a layer of safety and security to the college experience. Belonging to a group makes college a new home for students which ultimately leads to retention and success.

I didn't get involved like I should have until my second year of college, and as someone who came to App State as a first-generation student, I should have gotten involved immediately. Involvement is way more important than students may think, especially in students' first year in college as it is the most critical year. Social and academic involvements can help students persist to graduation, build community, and allow for leadership experiences.
