The government was very fearful of possible backlash from the Australian public, regarding both the boat peoples arrival and possibility of opening up the borders to SE Asian immigrants. The view of fear of boat people is still very prevalent in the Australian social-political climate today, with it being a hot topic among politicians. A poll from the Sydney Morning Herald in 2014 showed that 59% of Australian people did not believe that boat people were 'real refugees', and 60% believed that the Abbot government needed to treat the refugees harsher. The governmental view has caused some international conflict, with the Indonesian government condemning the policies in 2014. Furthermore, in the most recent Federal budget, a increase has been allocated to border patrols to send back Asylum seeker boats.
