How can you explain grammar, pronunciation, syntax, morphology etc. without linguistics? You probably can't. You might be able to point out the mistakes your students are making (good for you) but I guess it's not just about being able to point out the mistakes. You should be able to point out: what the mistake is, why it happens and how one can avoid making the same mistake. If you merely rely on your knowledge of the English language, without taking the fundamentals of language into consideration, this will probably turn out to be quite the challenge for you. If a student asks "Why do I have to do it like that?", a lot of teachers will answer "It is what it is. Just do it like that." Fair enough. But it would be more beneficial for children, especially non-native speakers, to receive a logical explanation, which could potentially deepen their understanding.

I have never seen it that way before learning about linguistics, but I have to agree. It is not possible to teach language without teaching linguistics. The alternative would be to let students learn everything by heart without drawing connections.

There are so many exercises that demand "Form a sentence with these words". Knowing about linguistics may help be a "better" teacher in the sense of not being "conservative" in what you accept. If I ever ask students to use certain words in sentences and they write sentences like "I don't like [word]", I will probably find it funny.

Linguistics in EFL teaching is important in order to understand the language you are teaching. If you understand the structure, rules etc. it is easier to explain certain issues, as well as it is easier for the students to understand them. For instance, if you are not aware of how sounds and sound sequences are produced, it can get really complicated to explain it to a student who has never used this sound sequence before. Therefore, subtly using linguistics as an EFL teacher can be very practical and beneficial for everyone involved.

It is useful because you can explain to your students why a certain word is combined like that and why it is pronounced the way it sounds like.
