In the 1900, India was still under the control of the British. They helped Britain become incredibly powerful due to all the natural resources they had along with the labor they provided. However, there was a nationalist by the name of Mahatma Gandhi that changed all of this.

His nonviolent resistance contributed to the overthrow of British rule in India and has had an impact on contemporary civil disobedience movements around the world. Gandhi's lifelong fight for India's freedom was his greatest accomplishment. He organized their resistance, battled discriminatory laws in the courts, and staged significant demonstrations against the colonial administration. His vision of liberation for his nation was realized on August 15, 1947. Britain had accepted that the country should be divided into a mainly Hindu India and a mainly Muslim Pakistan later that year as well which was a big change. Gandhi's strategy includes honesty, commitment, tolerance, self-sacrifice, and cooperation. This strategy was what also influenced a major part of other different nonviolence movements in the future. One of the more notable ones being Martin Luther King Jr.

During the time period 1450-1700, there were many new discoveries and innovations that facilitated the major events. One key player during this time period was Christopher Columbus. He, financed by Portugal, went on to explore and subsequently discover the existence of the Americas. He paved the path for European nations to colonize and oppress the people who lived there. Europe and the Americas immediately established trade relations. His discovery led to a large amount of trade being taken place along with new natural resources being introduced to Europe. For example, tobacco, potatoes, tomatoes, and other native American plants were exported to Europe. He had intended to travel to India, but his discovery of the existence of the Americas had a considerably greater influence. His cultivation of the various European societies that took root in the Americas led to the exchange of goods across the Atlantic known as the Columbian Exchange. Therefore, his expeditions served as the catalyst for centuries of European discovery and colonization of the American continents.

The majority of Europe, Asia, and sections of Africa were in ruins by the time World War II ended. Cities and towns had been leveled, bridges and railroads had been devastated, and the countryside had been burnt. The death toll from the battle was enormous for both military personnel and civilians.

After peace was declared, shortages of food, fuel, and several consumer goods persisted and, in many areas, got worse. Europe and Japan, both devastated by war, were unable to manufacture enough goods for their own populations, let alone for export.

The Black Death was one of the greatest pandemics in human history. The terrible, very contagious illness claimed at least 75 million lives in the 14th century across three continents. In European cities, hundreds of people died each day, and their bodies were frequently interred in mass graves. The plague completely decimated towns, rural areas, families, and religious institutions. After centuries of population increase, the world's population saw a catastrophic fall, from which it would take more than a century to recover.

The Industrial Revolution

In the time period 1750-1900 the Industrial Revolution occurred. It was the transition from creating goods by hand to using machines.
The factory system was established as a result of the Industrial Revolution, using massive workforces and power-driven machinery to mass-produce items. With interchangeable parts—identical pieces that could be swapped out for one another—manufacturers aimed to boost efficiency and profitability in the late 1800s. While this method made assembly simpler, it also made industrial work monotonous and repetitious. The environment, including chemicals and dust, as well as accidents involving machinery made factory employment hazardous and harmful to workers' health.
