In the 1930s, during the great depression, schools were about 1/4 of a building and there was only one teacher in the whole school and he/she would teach all grades in a single classroom. These teachers must've had good time management because they would've had to divide there time to teach all grades in the same day.

The Dewey Decimal System

Around the mid-early 1930s American schools started to use the Dewey Decimal System to teach students. The Dewey Decimal System is the way you organize library book by the number on their spine. The Dewey Decimal System was a break through in the teaching system that all schools in America eventually used. The system was created by a man named John Dewey.

Segregation In School Systems

In many places in America, especially the Southern part of America, African Americans were the poorest people in most, or all communities, the African American Schools suffered because they were unable to raise funds for teachers salaries and maintenance. African Americans were also unrepresented on School boards so they couldn't push for better funding for their schools. Nationally, more than 25% of students were black but they received only 12% of all education revenues.

School In The 1930s

The main purpose of going to school in the 1930s was to learn how to read because the 1930s was a vibrant time for both youth and educational literature. Teachers only got paid 40$ during a 5 month school period. In 1931 there was a series of books published called "Dick and Jane". They helped teach kids how to read by introducing one new word per page. They also had a limited amount of vocabulary per book. "Dick and Jane", was created by Zerna Sharp, a consultant for publisher for Scott Foresman, She believed that kids believed would learn how to read faster if they watched illustrations with words so the words would have a visual representation of the meaning of the words.

Tough Times in America

Being black in America in the 1930's was nothing easy, they had to use different bathrooms, wait in different lines, sit in the back of the bus, drink out of different water fountains, and even sit in different movie theaters . Difficult conditions for blacks in America would only get tougher in the 1930's. When the value of stocks dropped drastically on October 29, USA entered a severe economic crisis notoriously known as The Great Depression. Many people lost their jobs making it even harder for blacks to get a job whilst prejudice dramatically increased in the 1930's

It was an ongoing fight that took over 100 years after the Civil War. It Included many famous leaders like Martin Luther King jr., Booker T. Washington, and Rosa Parks.
