The main attributes of this behavior are based on protecting your group. However, in doing so the creature who is protecting is put at risk. It reduces the individual fitness, however, will increase the recipient's fitness. This survives increase of the closer relatives gets passed through the genes onto the next generation of that species.
Example 1: Worker bee: The worker bee would defend their colony to the end. It is against mostly attacking wasp. With this task, the bees won't reproduce and just try to protect their colony.
Example 2: Humans: A very common example of altruism behavior from humans. It is more like kindness. An employee drives his co-worker to work because his co-worker's car is broke and at the repair shop.

There is an evolutionary biology on the subject of altruism. In Darwin's theory of 'every man for himself'; Natural Selection. However, the altruism or the selflessness didn't work out, therefore creating a paradox. It wasn't until 'one for all and all for one' theory was called the 'kin selection'. The theory was put into place by E.O. Wilison.
From the kin selection theory, altruistic individuals would be more successful. The gene would be passed and shared with others in relation. In one of Wilison's research, it indicates selflessness of protecting a relative gene doesn't help evolution. Altruism emerges more of protecting social groups.

The benefits of altruism behavior are very much more beneficial than those of selfish behavior. According to Charles Darwin, Father of Evolution, a vampire bat would share food through regurgitation. This is very confusing because of the theory 'every man for himself.' A man helping a blind woman cross the street would be an example of human altruism behavior.
I would debate that altruism is very much good for human behavior. Most studies taken prove that these behavior are to make the altruist(a person who practices altruism) feel better. Not only that but increase the commonness of the gene, increasing the productive favorable outcome.
In my personal I believe very strongly, altruism is powerful benefits in physical and mental wellness. It is very common for people to think why altruism exists at all.
