I have learned that a modified version of cas9 could change the mutations in the construction of DNA base pairs, causing the disease/mutation to be removed from the organism. Therefore, that could change everything with the outcome of that organism’s traits. I have also learned that modified gene traits could be passed on to a genetically modified organisms offspring, then be passed on from offspring to offspring until the entire generation has the modification. Therefore, this could change everything with that generation.

With the help of CRISPR, we can become immune to diseases and live for a longer amount time. In addition, we can enhance qualities of organisms that are needed and more desirable. The negative side to artificial selection and genetic engineering is that the variation in organisms will lessen and affect the future generations.

I have learned that technologies such as CRISPR are not only limited to curing life-threatening diseases but how they are also capable of creating what we refer to as 'designer babies', or make people super intelligent or super strongg. However, I also learned that there could be a possible negative aspect: there could be harmful side effects that are not immediately evident. Furthermore, Genetic Engineering technologies could be cataclysmic if they were to fall into the wrong hands (ahem ahem, North Korea). Ultimately, I learned that, although Genetic Engineering is a powerful tool, with limitless capabilities, we should wait until the technology is further developed and declared to be safe before using it. Additionally, laws should be implemented to ensure that GE is used only for the right reasons - not for creating supersoldiers and waging war.

I have learned that artificial selection is still a new concept, and right now it is being pioneered. It is risky, with a slew of unintended consequences, and ethical dilemmas. On the other hand, it has the potential to change the world as we know it, in a multitude of beneficial ways. From the end of disease and aging, to tailoring humans for space travel and different planets. Already, we are using it for more yield in crops and meat. It will allow us humans to make other humans - but make them how we want them to- which is scary. The unborn humans don't have consent to anything that is being done to them, and a world with a humongous rift - edited and normal, might be made.
However, that is the future. Now, we have to make sure to work with scientists, so genetic engineering is done ethically, morally, and is regulated.

I have learned that artificial selection and genetic engineering would impact our world negatively and positively. With this type of technology, humans would be able to pre-select their babies and have ‘designer babies’. Parents would choose traits for their offspring according to what they think is healthy. Adding on, humans would be immune to many dangerous diseases like cancer. Furthermore due to genetic engineering humans can live longer than the average lifespan which is 79 years. Artificial selection can benefit the human society by many factors such as more food and more profit. But, if scientists keep editing genes as desired, many organisms would have the same genes and smaller gene pools which could cause diseases. For now all this is still being tested but some scientists wouldn't want to participate in creating a future like this since it may be against their morals (etc).

I have learned a lot about genetic engineering as well as artificial selection. There are many benefits/advantages to both of these concepts as well as negative affects. For genetic engineering CRISPR is a new technology that is known as a technological revolutionizer. CRISPR can do many things such as designer babies, immune us to diseases as well as eternal youth. Artificial selection on the other hand is whole other story. Artificial Selection is when humans breed animals or plants for the outcome of specific genetic characteristics. Selective breeding/artificial selection happen when parents with desired characteristics are selected from a population and are bred together. The cycle also happens with the offspring.

Artificial selection also has it's down side and the same goes for genetic engineering. Variation in organisms will decrease and can affect the future generations.

I have learned quite a lot about genetic modification, engineering, and artificial selection within organisms. With the technology that is being developed, like CRISPR and the one that is being used to genetically edit animals, TALEN, we can change nature and use it to our benefit (which, of course, brings the question of ethical and moral correctness). It can be beneficial in that, for example, it may be use to prevent offspring from inheriting a certain disease. Immunity to the disease will be passed on through the generations until the disease is completely eliminated. Editing DNA can also cause scientists to create “designer babies” or humans with desirable characteristics and traits. However, this may cause societal standards to drastically shift and cause mayhem among civilization. The GE technology that is being innovated has its pros and cons, but it is still a highly controversial issue. People are already not very accepting of their food being genetically modified, and they may be scared of the idea that we can do the same for humans. Technologies like CRISPR must be developed more before anyone can take a stance on it.

I have learned that there are several pros as well as cons to genetic engineering. For example, CRISPR can be used to cure/eradicate many genetic or pathogenic diseases. Not only that, but CRISPR can edit a human's traits to make a person run very fast, or to have intelligence that cannot be matched. However, CRISPR is a newly-discovered technology. Although it is easier and costs less to use, it is still unproven, and many people are not happy with genetic engineering. In the end, genetic engineering can change our lives forever, making the world a better place, but it is too risky to do so, since other problems could be caused by the efforts of creating a Utopian society.

Using CRISPR has many pro's as well as con's such as it can help cure many diseases that is affecting the population and can be used to cure many diseases. CRISPR can also genetically modify embryo's to produce a desired baby however this can be seen as ethically wrong meaning it is altering the way nature would take place. Also, CRISPR can be used negatively if gotten into the wrong hands

Artificial selection Artificial selection is a process by which humans breed plants and animals for particular genetic characteristics. There is a lot of good to it, as well as a lot of bad. Artificial selection is good as it can be used to cure diseases, and give organisms favorable traits using many advanced technologies such as CRISPR. There are many other technologies and processes like hybridization. On the other hand, there is a downside to it, as genetically modified traits may have unknown consequences to them, and many people find artificial selection unethical and just wrong("like playing god"). However, these technologies and processes should be more developed and secures before they are implemented as that can lead to many issues.

These traits determine whether you/other organisms have; resistance to disease or animals, animals/plants that produce more of the desired product, looks, physical features, and emotional/mental actions. Not only that, but i learned genetic engineering allows for selectively giving organisms desired genes over a short period of time. We can accomplish these tasks with new technologies, and will most likely be used and improved in the future.

These technologies bring advantages and disadvantages in the organism. Some benefits being that diseases might be able to be cured with gene therapy, but a disadvantage is that it is not a 100% success rate, and the consequences caused by that are unknown and unpredictable. Some disadvantages being that the gene pool will reduce as people want to be immune to certain things, look a certain way, and act a certain way. Its the same with the GMO, people want more meat from their cows and less fat, this will cause less diversity in the gene pool as they only select certain traits and breed them with each other. In the future these difficult tasks will be a breeze as our technologies have become very advanced.

There were multiple examples of artificially modifying traits. One being breeding dogs to become less aggressive. This had negative impacts since now they can no longer survive in the wild, and have to be kept at home as pets. Another example, if humans want a meaty cow, they mate cows with larger bodies to produce big offsprings which contain more meats.
I also learned that there is a new way to preventing diseases and disorders called gene therapy. This process allows researchers to insert genes into a patient's cell. This can replace a mutated cell with a healthier one, or remove the mutated gene completely, or add a new gene to help fight the disorder.
Lastly I learned that with genetic engineering, everything will change, as humans can control their own lives.

During the time I have given in completing the hyperdoc, I have learned so much about artificial selection and genetic modification. By hearing the words 'artificial selection' and 'genetic modifications' it sounds scary yet it is already being used in our world today. Humans have changed how long tomatoes can last, and different breeds of dogs using artificial selection. In addition, a recent technology, CRISPR, can make many different varieties in modifying genetics. The effects of these changes are huge. With this steady development in genetic engineering, it is possible that scary diseases can be cured. Things that were thought to be pure sci-fi can be made to real life. There are also consequences in taking those steps for both GE and artificial selection. There are always disadvantages. When applying artificial selection, there could be a specific trait in an organism that stops functioning. In GE, we don't know what side effects it will lead to.

The things that humans are capable of today, can be a huge leap to a better society, or a scarier one. But this technology has opened up so many ways and interests.

Artificial selection is when offspring are made to the desire for certain needs like for example a pet dog, artificial selection acts upon it to have it less aggressive and more friendly. Where natural selection is just offspring coming regularly with no specific desires.

As I worked on the Hyper doc, I have learned several things about Artificial selection. I learned about artificial selection and its advantages which are that it gives the desired traits and enhances quality, but also has its risks, such as unexpected results and the choices are subjective, and not everyone agrees on it. I also learned about advanced technologies used such as CRISPR and TALEN , an how it can make us immune to certain disease, and cure some too. To add on, Gene therapy is still being tested, as it can replace surgery and drugs for faults in genes. In general, I learned about how artificial selection and how advanced technologies will have a major impact in the future.

From the information and activities provided in the hyperdoc, I learned that by simply using the words 'genetic engineering' people get freaked out even if it is being practiced today. From my understanding, advanced technology such as CRISPER have made it possible for genetic modifications to cure external and internal diseases in the genes. Create organisms with more valuable traits to their environment (even humans). Manufacture human babies and immune us humans to aging and living longer.

I have learned what artificial selection is(where humans breed plants and animals for a specific genetic characteristic) and how it helps us humans. And with the development of advanced technologies such as Cas9, Gene therapy (a technique in which doctors can use for eliminating disease. It uses sections of DNA to prevent diseases), and CRISPR, artificial selection can be performed very easily and will be beneficial to humans. CRISPR has the ability to modify animal, plant, microorganisms cells. It can also cure diseases such as cancer. Cas9, another tool to increase the time period of humans, can correct incorrect DNA codes and avoid the resulting mutation (causing cancer/other diseases). Although, artificial selection can bring consequences such as mutations.
