Bunu

Bunu was one of the most interesting characters who stood out from most of the characters in the story. He didn't stay quiet and spoke his mind whenever he wanted. Although Christian's mom scolded him for doing so, and there might be a chance someone could hear he didn't care. He was the exact same from the beginning of the book to his death.

Mama

Mama Florescu, or Moira Florescu, is the mother of both Cici and Cristian. She was the most paranoid of the family and was one of the few people who discouraged Cristian's revolutionary ideas, which he got from his grandfather. Although very paranoid and doubtful, Mama still loved her family and would do anything for her kids. At the end of the book, Cristian finds out that his mother made a deal with a securitate in which she informs on the family in exchange for her children's safety.

Luca

Luca was Cristians best friend throughout most of the book. Luca dreamt of becoming a doctor. He was a very smart and kind just like Cristian. Luca went everywhere with Cristian and stayed with him when he needed him the most.

Papa

Cristians father or papa was a character that we rarely see in the book. The reason for this is that he works long hours just to supply the necessities that the family needs. He rarely speaks to anyone and keeps his thoughts to himself, unlike his father, Bunu. Even with all of differences Cristians father has with his father at the end of the book we see that Papa also though of rebelling just like Cristain and Bunu but kept it to himself

Dan was the son of an American ambassador to Romania. He was very nice to Cristian and considered him his friend. Dan gave Cristian a lot of valuable things that came from the US and gave Cristian a chance to experience new things that he's never experienced.

Cristian Florescu

Cristian is a rebellious 17-year-old who takes from his grandfather, Bunu. At the beginning of the book, Cristian gets blackmailed by the securitate to be an informer on the Van Dorns. Cristian couldn't do anything about it because if he didn't accept being an informer, he would go to jail and suffer torment and torture. Cristian became what he despised the most. Although he becomes an informer, he doesn't tell the full truth when he meets with the Securitate, which is one of the many ways he secretly rebels against his leader, Nicolae Ceaușescu.
