Engagement is how a students interacts with the material being presented. Some students do well with routine and, therefore, it promotes the highest level of learning for that student. However, that is not the case for all students. That is why UDL is so important because it acknowledges that not all students are the same.

The UDL guidelines for engagement are to ensure that a student is gaining enthusiasm for the topic and understanding the importance that it holds. This is known as recruiting interest amongst the student. Another guideline is sustaining effort and persistence, meaning the child learns to challenge themself while striving for goals and working with others. The final guideline is self regulation. Students that are self-regulating know how to handle their emotions and evaluate themself.

Representation refers to the ways that students choose to think about and interpret information. This varies for people with ability differences or with cultural differences. UDL allows for students to receive unique forms of learning, resulting in more opportunities to connect the material being taught.

Perception is a key guideline of representation. Perception refers to the way that a student is able to take in the content that they are encountering, whether it is through visual, auditory or traditional means. Another guideline is comprehension of the material. This is the way that the student uses previous knowledge to build and guide their understanding of a new idea. Lastly, symbols and language are the final guideline for representation. These dedicate a lot of meaning and attention to communication and having an idea of the way information is being transferred.
