1. What are students doing?
Students will be watching the videos and reviewing the provided research articles with the teacher.
2. What teacher moves are you making?
The teacher will be modeling how to can a text when researching to pull out only the information that applies to the task using the NOAA article.
3. How are you exciting students?
They have a hands-on task to prepare for and will be able to conceptualize their ideas and move around the classroom freely. Their project also has real-world applications because it acknowledges the purpose of building codes and preparation for natural disasters.
4. How do students know what they are doing?
The students will have the task explained to them by the teacher and will be given the observations worksheet so they are able to keep track of their design process.
5. What resources are you using?
I am using all of the included resources in this stage because the rest of the stages will only use the observations worksheet, since the bulk of the resources will come from the students as they research their design.

What resources are you using?
I am allowing the students to conduct their own research.
4. How are you exciting students?
The students are conducting research and building structures for a purpose- real world activities.
5. How do you know if students understand what they are doing?
I will know that students understand the task once I have judged their projects in their preferred contests. I will also be collecting their observational worksheets at the end of the activity.
6. How are you monitoring/assessing them as they work?
I am observing them working collaboratively and collecting their papers after judging their structures based on the contests they have selected.

What teacher moves are you making?
I am judging the contests, modeling the grading and inspection process for my students. I am allowing them to reason as I judge, but relying strictly on the structure's performance against each criteria.
3. What resources are you using?
I am using a tape measure for the tallest tower contest, a bowl and a pitcher ("rain"), and a hair dryer ("wind")
4. How do you know if students understand and are progressing within/mastering the standard?
They are answering the questions on their observations worksheet and paying attention to other designs. I will collect their papers at the end of the activity and pull them for small group discussions about their structures while they are in their independent reading time.

Students have been interacting with material regarding measurement in math and natural disasters in science. This lesson ties in both of these concepts, as well as ELA through a research and design project. In this STEM lesson, the students will be grouped in threes. They will conduct research on hurricanes and other natural disasters and how we have altered building codes and practices to ensure that our structures are as safe as possible in the event of a natural disaster. The students will take individual notes on their research that will serve as guides as they create structures out of unconventional materials. They will have the opportunity to test their structures against multiple natural disaster elements, identifying damage done to their own projects and those of their peers. They will have the opportunity to enter their structures into various contests, in which we will measure their qualities in relation to one another. We will touch on math standards through measurement, ELA through presentations of design and research, and science as we learn why we have codes in place for natural disasters.

This would have to be done with a very specific group of students who could handle it, though.

What can go wrong in the lesson?

The students can easily get off task if I am not circulating and prompting them with questions. I need to be a resource.

How can I prevent these moments from happening?

I will act as a resource and use good classroom management strategies like Dojo.

Are all my materials gathered?

Yes. The materials necessary are mostly easy to find.

Is my plan B ready?

Yes- if the students are unable to handle this activity in groups, I will model the entire process for them and we will build one structure as a collective group, testing it against all three contests.
