Increase of 40% of food generated throughout the last ten years.

A survey conducted shows that 27% of homes had leftovers, whereas 24% of them were either spoilt or expired food. People buy too much, which results in the neglecting of food. 54% of people suggest that the packaging of food sold at both supermarket and other food outlets should pack food in a smaller portion.

I have learnt that people throw away food due to it being expired or spoilt.

Following the findings from the consumer survey, NEA launched an outreach programme in November 2015 to encourage the adoption of smart food purchase, storage and preparation habits that help consumers save money while reducing food wastage at source. Since its launch, NEA has further developed the programme to enhance and expand its initiatives.

The outreach programme features educational materials publicised on newspapers, television and through community-led initiatives, which included an educational skit, as well as a resource package for schools. To date, NEA has collaborated with more than 40 premises, including supermarkets, food retail establishments, schools and other private organisations to display educational materials on their premises encouraging consumers to cherish and not waste food.

 The locally developed machine, managed by Eco-Wiz, mixes the waste with microbes which digest and decompose the waste into water that is then reused by the machine for self-cleaning or to clean the bin centre.

Zero Waste SG visited the 2 trial markets for the launch, which include both hawker centres and wet markets. Ang Mo Kio Blk 628 Market (with 218 stalls) generates about two tonnes of food waste per day, while Tiong Bahru Market (with 342 stalls) generates about three tonnes of food waste per day. Most of the food waste are generated from market slab stalls and table cleaning operations. The food waste recycling systems could reduce up to 80% of the total waste generated from both locations.

Before the implementation of the food waste recycling trial, NEA and the two vendors conducted a food waste audit of the markets to understand the type and amount of food waste, and also conducted training sessions with the stallholders and table cleaners at the two hawker centres.

Gojee (available for iPhones, Android smart phones and iPads) allows people to exchange recipes, and users can search for recipes by ingredients. For example, if I have coconut milk in my fridge, I can search for recipes containing coconut milk. Containing about 10,000 recipes from over 300 contributors on the internet, users are sure to find recipes based on ingredients they already have in their fridges or pantries. Cnet recommends Gojee for people "who have a desire to cook but may not necessarily have a specific dish in mind."

222 Million Tons is an iPad app that gets its name from the 222 million tons of food wasted every year in industrialized nations, according to a 2011 UN study. The app creates one-week menus and shopping lists according to the size of a person's household. The website for the app asks, "No one wants to waste food, but how does one person get through a bunch of celery before it goes limp without getting sick of celery?" That's question that inspired the developers to create the app.

The Green Egg Shopper for iPhones allows users to manage and organize grocery shopping lists. Users can sort lists alphabetically, by category, or priority. They can also view list of items near expiration, and can sort them with three categories of shelf life (short, medium, long). The app also allows users to link a store to the list, and take and attach photos to the items on their lists. Users are able to check items off of their list once it is purchased. The paid version allows users to create multiple shopping lists.

A lot. They throw away those rice.

Feels very bad. Those poorer countries (mentioned Indonesia & Cambodia) doesn’t have any food to eat.

Food tastes bad. No appetite.

No. No matter how bad the food taste, I always finish them all. My daughter is currently volunteering in Indonesia so I pity those people in Indonesia (How they couldn’t afford to have any food).

Bad for the environment.

Allow those vendors to give people lesser portions of food.

Design idea  1: design a foldable lunch box

Designing the foldable lunch boxes with different sizes for different servings so that dinners get to choose their serving that they want and it is portable for them too. The lunchbox also has a food weighing scale so that when users want to have lesser food example, they could have an accurate measurement on how much they want to consume. Less food would be wasted as they are able to finish their food

idea - When we were interviewing we found out that people that dined at the hawkers do not know their food limits and could not finish their food after ordering alot.

Design idea 2 : Having a food wastage a reward app
At the tray return station there could be a person stationed there, so after returning your tray they will see if you finished your food and let you scan code to get a reward

idea: we wanted singaporeans to be encouraged to not waste food. Something like the exercise app that they have it
