I think that was because I used to write simple essays that didn't require much thought or use enough transitions. 

Now, I use the outline to keep me focused. My writing process is different but it works. First I write a quick draft. Then I choose the best ideas and organize them into an outline. I adjust my thesis statement. Then I keep the outline on my desk as I add more content. As you can see in the essay below, my writing is much more focused than before.

The essay I have uploaded here represents a change in how I used outlines.
