One of the first examples of foreshadowing is the repeated aspiration of the main character, Ruth Duncan, to become a doctor. Due to the time period (1914) and her gender, this is not a possibility. In chapter one she narrates a conversation with her father,"But I want to be a doctor" (18). Later she continues to try to become a doctor and may enroll at a women's medical college in London. Another example of foreshadowing is that Ruth's father keeps shutting down Ruth's hopes and interests. When a friend tells her father of the medical schools for women Dr. Duncan replies,"I've heard about those places...That's not real medicine. Besides, nursing school is expensive enough" (29). This foreshadows Ruth eventually applying to a medical school or at least planning to apply. The continued disagreements with her father also foreshadow her leaving home to pursue her own dreams.
