In the video clip, LEVITTOWN 1947, the video portrays how the construction and market of the suburban homes were primarily meant to aid and target the American soldier, who are integrating back from the war, and their families. Moreover, in the article, “15 Minutes With Levitt of Levittown,” guarantee consumers a house as long as they have a steady stream of income. In the past, Levittowns were able to sell thousands of modern homes for cheap and reasonable prices. However, in our modern day Santa Clarita, we clearly see that is not the case anymore. The current market and real estate clearly target and contract with the upper-middle class citizens, who make higher incomes. While the development of the Levittown allowed almost anyone to buy a house in their small town, now it is fairly difficult to purchase a house without a high, steady income. Additionally stated in the article “15 Minutes With Levitt of Levittown,” the modern inflation also defines a play of why it is harder to buy a suburban home. Even with the benefit from the government, former soldiers from the war could not even afford to live in Santa Clarita. In the Levittown article, the author described the appearance of the suburban homes resounding with modern day suburbia. The article stated, “Late commuters, lost among identical rows of houses along identical street blocks… extra-sized lots around their houses at no extra expense.” As the article continues to list the characteristics of the a suburban community, Santa Clarita directly presents these traits. Most of the houses on each block are almost identical and it is quite common for visiting family members to get lost in the identical array of houses. In the Levittown article, the author further relates to the Santa Clarita community by describing the recreational places located in the Levittown. The article states how Levittown consisted of “school sites, baseball diamonds, shopping center, parking lots, new railroad station , factory sidings, churches truck arteries, newspapers, garden clubs, swimming pools, doctors, dentists, and town hall.” Just like Levittown, Santa Clarita was constructed so that many of the recreational locations and places are convenient to the suburban residents. In that case, Santa Clarita is similar to the Levittown to a large extent because our community has many nearby recreational sites such as, community pools, Henry Mayo Hospital, Master’s University, and way more. In the article, “At 50, Levittown Contends With Its Legacy of Bias,” Bruce Lambert explains how the Levittown community was straightforward about their views of African Americans presiding in their Levittown community. Lambert wrote how African Americans were “turned away because he was black.” He even bring up statistics showing how the Levittown society was “overwhelmingly  white -- 97.37 percent in the 1990 census.” Lambert also stated that communities wouldn’t sell their houses to an African American because “90 or 95 percent of our white customers will not buy into the community.” As quoted, the racial discrimination in these Levittowns were a real problem. However, Santa Clarita is now very diverse and tolerant of any race or religion. Communities are open to their neighbors no matter what the color of their skin is. In the Levittown article and the Happy Daze documentary, we can see a repeating theme of how people in the Levittown are often conforming to the community’s trends and cultures. For example the article explains how these close Levittown neighborhoods would have typical garden clubs or cook outs, presenting the need for parents or students to fit into the community. Although we may seem some conformity in the past, Santa Clarita has shifted away from community conformity to the more urban trends due to the Digital Age. While Levittown residents were confined to being connected with just closeby neighborhoods, Santa Clarita residents have access to media and technology. In the article, “Modern Ranch Homes,” Alpha Sehlin describes how the suburban homes are constructed and the benefits the community receives. Sehlin describes how the “exterior is planned in an agreeable manner to fulfill the design desired on the interior… sloping ceilings in all rooms expose the heavy structural beams  which are spaced six feet apart.” Reading the article, the design reminded me of how my home and many other of my friends homes followed these designs.
