When Titus's father, Vespasian, was emperor, Vespasian appointed Titus as the head of the Jewish war. The war ended when Titus conquered Jerusalem in 70 CE. In 71 CE, Titus was made commander of the Praetorian Guard. After being appointed as commander, Titus lived in the palace with a woman named Berenice, who was frowned upon by the Romans. He dismissed her twice, the last time right after the death of his father. When Vespasian died, Titus took his rightful place as emperor and while the Romans were thrilled, Titus's brother Domitian was not. Titus was described as "the darling of the human race" and won much of the empires affection by covering expenses for restoring Campania after Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 CE. Another expense Emperor Titus helped the citizens of Rome with was the rebuilding of Rome when a fire broke out in 80 CE. Shortly after he won the publics approval, he completed the construction of the Colosseum. Titus died in 81 CE and left one daughter, Flavia Julia, behind. Some believe that the death of Emperor Titus had something to do with Domitian poisoning him, but others believe he died from disease.
