1-6 children in the U.S. suffer from mental, behavioral, or developmental disorders---more than 2.6 million have been diagnosed with anxiety or depression. Those suffering from depression can and should take steps to help themselves, including opening up to their parents, taking deep breaths and perform other physical or intellectual activities that make them happy. "Nutrition, exercise, sleep, predictable routines, and social support" are essential.

This video surrounds the notion of self empowerment through psychological awareness. The effectiveness of this practice will increase as kids get older, because their brain will develop so they can better understand the abstract idea of thoughts and the emotions they lead to. Self awareness is key for maintaining a healthy mind, and developing a strong will. While this practice alone probably won't solve cases of clinical depression, it can't hurt.

This video follows a segment of the JRE podcast featuring Jonathan Haidt, a social psychologist and professor of Ethical Leadership at New York University Stern School of Business. He identifies social media as a powerful catalyst for depression in adolescents. A survey from the Higher Education Research institute tracked the number of college students who to having a psychological disorder like depression. There was a massive increase of "yes" responses when looking at Gen Z as opposed to millennials---in the span of 4 years it goes from less than 6% to almost 15%. The rate for female adolescent suicide between ages 14-19 went up 62% from 2009-2017, while the rate for millennial girls only rose 17%. Rates for 10-14 year olds rose 189% over the same period. While the cause has not been definitively established, social media is the most likely cause.

I chose to educate myself on depression both because its a pertinent issue and because I'm personally interested in studying psychology. I learned a lot about signs and symptoms of child depression, I gained a general understanding of the causes, and I learned how to be of service to those with depression (as a friend, a psychologist, and a parent). This assignment has set me on the right track for understanding the issue, so that I can help others to combat their depression more effectively (either through direct action or by teaching others who will go on to help depressed children).

The most important thing I learned--and something I've already put into practice since learning it---is the importance of talking to someone when I think there may be a problem rather than staying silent for fear of starting the problem. The risk of causation is far outweighed by the risk of staying silent.
