It is a very good way to self-reflect on the type of teacher you are and what you want to strive to be. I agree with Mrs. Branscum. I do believe the type of teacher you are can vary from day to day. However, I WANT to be a RUNNER all day every day so lots of room for growth.

I enjoyed looking at the different types of teachers. We all think we work hard, but when we look at the list, we can easily see where we fall short. Unfortunately, so can everyone else! Yikes! 😬 It's time to step up my game!
I think it would be easy to get caught up in plugging other teachers into categories and not focusing on our selves.
I think that is why I like the term "Carver Family" rather than "Carver Team". It has been my experience that teammates typically try to compete against each other to show superiority to win more play time. A family with the same goal will uplift each other, encourage each other and will be the first ones there for you when things go wrong. For the first time since Carver opened, I feel like we are a family, helping each other become our best!

I thought it was really interesting to see the different types of workers described in detail. It was a great prompt for self-reflection! I think personalities tie into these a lot too. I feel like no matter where we all fall in the descriptors, it just works here at Carver because we support each other.

As I read the characteristics of each category, I reflected a lot over the past 27 years of teaching. I have been a runner most all of this time. Looking back when my kids were young, I wish now that I had not been running quite so hard and spending long hours at school of an evening. So I encourage teachers with children at home to give your all at school, but make home the greater priority. That time will be gone before you know it!
I also feel that at different stages in your teaching career you fall into more than one kind of teacher. It's easy to get tired and even negative at times. Who you associate with really affects that. That is where our Carver team comes in. We need each other! We need to encourage one another, share new ideas, and maintain the excitement in our building. This has been such a great year and has truly renewed my energy to keep running! I love my students and I love Carver!

On the first day of school, on my VERY first year teaching, a teacher walked by me and said, "Only 173 days left to go." I have never forgotten that negative comment and what an impact it could have made on a new teacher. The atmosphere has changed drastically from that first year at Carver. Satotha has pushed me to be more and step outside of my comfort zone. Thank you for pushing me to keep moving!

"Stepping out of my comfort zone" speaks very loudly to me! I am a creature of habit, and I like the way I do things. However, since taking Lit Lab, I have found out that it is okay to step out of my comfort zone and try something new. I discovered that something really wonderful and beautiful can come from it. Looking forward to stretching myself some more...I think!!

The most important thing I learned from Mrs. Burr's Jan. 22 Memo is that no matter what, keep running. It's easy to get discouraged, and we've all felt near the burn-out zone. Mrs. Stipp used to tell me that when I feel I'm at the end of my rope, tie a knot. So all you Runners out there: stay positive, know your work is worthwhile, keep giving 110%, because YOU are STRONG! You are a RUNNER!
~Tamie

After teaching for 27 years it would be easy to coast into retirement - read the same books, use the same lesson plans, use the same classroom management techniques, etc. And over the years I have found myself in ruts from time to time. The only way to get out of a rut is to 'run' out of it. The best way I have found to be a runner is to constantly be ready to learn something new. Accept change, embrace it. I would also say to be a runner is to realize that you don't always have the answers. I have learned from principals, teachers outside of our district, colleagues and many first year teachers. Everyone has something to contribute. Runners should be ready to contribute and ready to learn.
