Hazel Nash and her family get into a car crash that leaves Hazel's memory impaired and her father dead. When she wakes up in the hospital, an FBI agent questions her, only to find that she really doesn't remember much. In a desperate act of trying to figure out her past, she has her brother help her escape from the hospital. She goes back to her apartment and discovers guns in her drawer. She then leaves to find her old friend, Butchie, who fills her in on some of the information and eventually helps her get even more back with truth serum. She doesn't discover much, other than some information from a strange answer she gave to the question, "Did you kill Nixon?" to which she responded with, "We all did."

I'd say that the author picked this cover because of how the components of the image link to the story. For example, the main figure, the girl with the gun, is a reflection of Hazel, with her guns and basic violent nature. The other two figures could be Hazel, and her father, Jack, who were very close, and as Skip said, both "spoke a language only the two of them understood", so I'd say they're connected on a deeper level, which is also why they're holding hands.
