*works best if you have the physical painting to look at.
Show students a picture of an acrylic painting and ask them to think about what they are looking at. What do they see? After some students share, ask them what they think it would be like to feel this painting. If they don't answer immediately, you can help them with trigger words like would it feel bumpy, wet, soft, etc. What are you thinking? Finally, ask the students what they are wondering about this painting. This question might require some small group talks to get ideas flowing.

For this activity, you will ensure each student has their own piece of paper and crayons, and you will take them outside to an area with many different textures. Ask the students to go around and color on five other surfaces on their paper. That could be brick walls, concrete, leaves, etc. Afterward, take them inside and have a few students showcase what textures they chose to use. If you want to form it into a game, have the students try and guess what surfaces they did.

For this activity, students will be learning how different textures can create different mediums to paint with. Students will need clothespins, cardboard rolls, paper, and other textures/fabrics/materials. Students will go outside and grab three to five different textures ranging from sand or dirt to flowers and leaves. If students grabbed sand or dirt, they would glue it to a cardboard roll to make a stamp roller. If they grab materials like leaves, bark, or flowers, they will clamp them on a clothespin to create a makeshift paintbrush. After making their paintbrushes or stampers, they will paint their pictures using the materials they grabbed and can share with other students. After, students will have a gallery walk to see what all the other students created, and the class will discuss what they saw.
