Growing up I moved around A LOT. When I was four my parents divorced and with my mother in the military, it was almost a requirement of my life. Throughout my life I have lived all over in all different types of neighborhoods. From military base to low-income housing; From city to suburb, but all these places taught me something meaningful. I was born in Joshua Tree, California and from there lived in Chicago, Indiana, South Carolina, and several towns in Texas.

As you can see it's a very small town in what I like to call the middle of nowhere dessert. My favorite part about visiting now is climbing up and sitting on my grandmas roof around sunset, all the houses around are one story so you can see the whole town and all the mountains surrounding it.

Which seems like a super young age to give a child a device but, when you think about the device it was, it seems comprehensible. An iPod shuffle, for those who don't know, is a small device with no screen only a play-pad and a charging/headphone jack. It came pre-loaded with all your early 2000's and late 90's pop divas essentials. I wont lie when I tell you this device was the kick-start in my love for music. For this reason I will always feel this device was highly productive and I wish I still had it today. unfortunately, Apple discontinued the iPod shuffle, in 2017.

I used to believe in god too (Until later events I'll discuss) but one of the main reasons is, I just stopped going to church. In growing up moving around I was exposed to many different religions and beliefs. When I moved with my mom at age 6 I lost a lot of my culture and religion. Not because she was not religious or cultured but because she simply never talked to me about her values.

Throughout life people go through many experiences that shape their beliefs. From age 6-8 I had a major experience that shaped my life for the better and worse. Around this time I was sexually assaulted by my then-step-father. Luckily my family was able to testify and put him in jail. He was served the maximum sentence for his crime, 30 years in prison. This event happened over 6 years ago but I still heal from the trauma of it today. This was another reason for my loss of religion. I used to believe that someone like this idea of god could save me from this horrid situation, but I feel it was my perseverance that got me through and continues to do so.

I believe that in better solidifying my beliefs as well as surrounding myself with others that share different experiences and beliefs, will allow me to further broaden my awareness and help me become a better person in general. We hear about it everywhere, in schools, media, the dinner table, but it isn't until we grow and start thinking for ourselves that we truly discover our own beliefs. As you can see in the article above, my current town, Darien, is fairly democratic. Though that does not mean our town is anything short on conservative families.

Throughout my life my dad has always been my biggest educator. In fact, at one point in his life he was working to become a senator. My dad grew up in a low-income family with seven other siblings and working parents. So it's no surprise that from a very young age, he had to find his own way in stepping into the world. At age 19, he joined the Marines and took the liberty and opportunity in learning the politics of this world. But seeing my dad through all these phases of life, I would say allowed me another perspective in seeing things in life. I would be lying if I said my dad never effected my political views, but as I've grown older I've understood how my dad has allowed me to make my own choices. From giving me material to watch or study (Like the news channel above) to just having discussions with me on everyday politics and how they works, my father has given me and arsenal of tools in navigating even just education in general. Even to today, you can find him in his office watching news and events, taking notes, and later discussing them with the family.

Though my dad has played a major influence on my view of politics, he has also let me make my own decisions at the same time. Ever since middle school he has said, "School will not teach you all the things that have occurred in this world, ask your Tia's and Tio's they will all tell you the same thing. It is up to you to educate yourself on the full picture. It is up to you to fact check and research these things for yourself, to better your knowledge, for you" and has given me the resources to do so. His approach to teaching politics has allowed me to come up with my own beliefs on matters. Even in our conversations now. I remember how, when the news of Ukraine hit, he sat me down and gave me a small professor like lesson on all the motives and events of the news and helped me understand what was happening in real time. I believe if I continue to use the books and authors, reports, and strategies in research my dad has taught me, it will allow me to make wise decisions in politics and stay educated on the current events of the world

Since my first time listening to music, I was sure it was what I wanted to do with my life. In fact even now, I am a part of a singing group here at Hinsdale South, and have a guitar that I play regularly. Music has always been one of my favorite forms of not only art, but therapy. It allows me to express how I'm feeling without the guilt or shame attached to some emotions or some situations. It allows me to be truly me and fully present for all that I'm feeling. Music is surely a career field I will pursue, even if it's not my main day job.

Both my parents delved into the arts in their youth. My father, was a break-dancer. Heavy in the Hip-hop scene he was one of the best B-Boys in Chicago (His words, not mine). He even went on tours with local rappers and was known for his explosive moves and difficult poses. My step-mother was also involved in the Hip-Hop scene, but also delved further in different arts. One of her first jobs was at a photography studio, where she developed and learned a lot about photography. She also was a camp leader in graphic design classes for youth in her early 20's. And not only did she break-dance but also took a hobby in gymnastics for 10 years. Like I said; its in my blood.

Speaking of our Bloodlines. If it's not apparent in my everyday appearance I come from a fully Mexican family on both sides. I could go on for days about my culture and all the history of it but I want to focus on a cultural event coming up for me soon: a Quinceanera. A Quinceanera is a HUGE blowout party thrown for a girl on her 15th birthday. Quince parties are like weddings. Extravagant and over the top. A Quince is usually thrown to celebrate a girl coming into womanhood. Historically, Mexican societies would throw a ball for all the girls turning 15 that year to present them to society as females ready for marriage. It almost reminds me of Bridgerton, but make it Mexican. Nowadays, teens mostly just have their party with all their (excessively large) family and their friends. Some girls even choose to have their quince as a trip. Friends of mine have gone to Columbia, Paris, and all over the world. Wherever the party is held and no matter how big the Fiesta, it is a landmark event in a lady of my cultures life, that we all look forward to.

I was given my first phone because, after the assault my mom wanted a way to reach me, especially because of the fact my mom was now a single mom in the military. I only feel that it gave me a portal when I was too young to navigate it. Left unsupervised with a device like that, I was able to spend all my time on it and was never corrected.

Not only has technology made its way into our everyday life and everywhere you look; but it has also made its way into our classrooms. I remember when tech was first introduced in the classroom setting for me. I was in 6th grade and we had a cart full of tablets for all of the 6th grade classes. We shared with one other kid in a separate class and just used a different log in. Originally, we only used the tablets for our math class, we never took them home or were able to use them outside that classroom. Then COVID Hit. They gave us our tablets to take home and we continued to use them for the next year while at home. While this new invention allowed us to continue our education, it also gave way for more distractions and got us all addicted to a screen. I see the issue even now, in the lunch room, at a dinner with friends, we are all addicted to our screens. It's a habit that I don't believe my generation will break.
