Point: Yes, the purpose of college has changed and college tuition has become far too expensive for “normal families.”

Evidence: “There was once a time when it made sense for society not to expect students to pay much for college: most of the students were going into the ministry, or into some other low-paying but society-benefiting career, so it behooved the nation to keep costs low by supplementing funds with endowments and gifts.” “The average cost for a year at a four-year college ranges from $9,410 for in-state public tuition to $32,410 for private.”

Explanation: In the past, going to college was not the standard so prices could be kept low. Today, it is normal for college to form part of many student’s plans after high school so the price of the tuition has increased a considerable amount. The average cost of tuition for only a year at a four-year college ranges from high numbers to even higher numbers that many students and their families simply can’t afford.
Link: The worries that students have about these increasing prices have become a large factor throughout the process.
