This article presents opposing viewpoints on what it means to experience emotions as feelings, and explains the subtle difference between the two: one being an experience and the other being a chemical reaction in the brain. One option is that the amygdala is designed to aid threat detection and responses, and the double path of two different kinds of fear built into the brain. The other option is that brain is just another emotion like love that a person experiences when prompted by certain stimulus.

This could be an example of proof that the amygdala is more of a part of feeling fear, but also is a problem because it would be disproven by the "routing center" idea.

This brings into question whether or not the free will is a construction of the mind based on the brain's outputs.

According to Ohman, fear in the brain has a reliable method of stimulation moving through the brain, which is unique among feelings. The author proposes that the sequence of stimulation from the subcortial pathway into the amygdala implies that conscious thought is not involved in the feeling of fear, but the feeling can be diminished by conscious thought.

It does so by pointing out contradictions in the current perception of the brain, and offering an alternative model for the brain's functionality. Ultimately, comes to the conclusion that there is not enough proof in the medical field for one conclusion or the other.
