I know that technology is becoming more and more prevalent in today's world- and in the classroom. I am excited to use technology in my classroom. However, I am concerned that I may contribute in a child becoming addicted to phones/tablets or other forms of technology. Do you have the same concern? How will you balance screen time with other activities?

Many students do tend to get "addicted" to the screen. In my experience this is a result of not having access to this at home because of lack of income or lack of internet access.
I always allow 5-10 minutes at the end of every class for my students to use their technology in an educational way, but they can choose what they access. This also depends on how the students behaved in my class.
These sites include any pre-approved educational games or Epic.
I also incorporate technology into their learning. Every time I create an assignment, I think about what technology I can use to help teach this assignment or make it more engaging.
Technology will always be in their lives and on their minds, so it's better to embrace it than deny it.
My school is set up with complete control over their chromebooks. At any time, we can access their screen from our computer and if they are on task, we can block and close the unwanted open tab and redirect them!

I have the same concern. The teacher should balance screen time but having a certain amount of screen time during the day. That screen time should be taken by account by doing homework. The teacher can also assign homework that can be done outside like an activity.

Students becoming addicted to technology is definitely a big concern during this day and age. I think that as long as teachers put in specific times where students are not allowed to be on their devices this can limit addiction to technology.

Addiction to technology is becoming a problem in today's society, and I do believe it will only grow as more children go to school and have to use technology. I think as long as teachers make sure that students are not on the computers or tablets but for only a couple hours during the day, it could be a lot better (at least at school).

Yes, I do have the same concern that I may contribute in a child becoming addicted to phones/tablets or other forms of technology. I want to be a middle school teacher, and there are typically multiple class periods in a day at middle schools. Since I will be teaching in this type of environment, I will balance screen time with other activities by allowing my students to have a few minutes of educational screen time at the end of their class, depending on how much work they get done in class. This educational screen time will be where students can work on their homework online or play educational games. Students can also use this educational screen time to do homework on paper. I will incorporate technology in my lessons, but I will try to limit the total amount of time that students spend using technology to about half of each class time or less. I will try to think of other activities for some of the days for each class to participate in that involves them getting up out of their seats and being active. I will also still have my students write some of their notes and do some assignments on paper, as handwriting skills are very important in life. Since I specifically want to teach math, I will have my students do activities and math problems on the marker boards, the Smart Boards, and other available places in the classroom. I will also try and encourage other teachers in the school district to limit the screen time in their classrooms, so students are receiving more equal screen time per class and not getting too much screen time in any of their classes.

It is a concern of mine knowing how easily children can become addicted to these technologies. However, I do believe that by using them in the correct way, we can avoid some of these issues. I hope to make my students aware of what is acceptable use on their computers during class time vs. what they can do on them outside of class time.

I have the same concern. I think now a days kids are thrown in front of a phone screen as a way to entertain and keep them busy. So I fear when I bring technology into my classroom I will lose the train of thought that I am trying to get across to the students. One things I have thought about doing is limited the amount of internet usage so when they do get to use technology it is intriguing. Another is send home activities that your students can do on paper, so they are not glued to the phone or iPad when they get home.

I have always preferred to work on paper than I have to use techology. However, it is a good tool for classrooms. For my future classroom I hope to find a healthy medium. I would prefer to focus on working off the computer, and using technology as a group, such as using the smartboard.
