It envisions a future where society is in decline, totalitarianism has created vast inequities, and innate weaknesses of human nature keep the characters in a state of conflict and unhappiness. 

• Fahrenheit 451 

In Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury explores the theme of a dystopian society where government control and technological advancement suppress intellectual freedom and individuality. The novel depicts a world where books are banned, critical thinking is discouraged, and mindless entertainment dominates daily life

The aforementioned dystopian novels and films share a common theme: they portray humans as good or evil, and feature dramatic conflict, creative world-building, thematic relevance, and worst-case situations.

There are two types of future worlds that the authors write about. Fantasies that are written by their imagination and looking at the present and writing about what it would lead to.

From their novels, they are addressing cautiousness and vigilance of the future.

Research Lois Lowry. Since this book is a little older, you will not only be able to find biographies,

but also interviews! Find out as much as you can about what inspired her to write this book, what

she wanted to show/tell/warn readers, what her personal political and/or religious beliefs are, and

anything else that may have influenced what she put into the book. (Challenge: debate whether or

not we even want to know what an author thinks before we read a book. Will it help us understand the book better, or will it influence our own thinking in a bad way?)

What inspired her:

  Lois Lowry's dad had dementia. Lois’s father had forgotten so many important things such as his daughter (Lois’s sister) Helen’s death. Helen had sadly died from cancer at a young age. Due to his dementia he had forgotten his own daughter's death. This deeply affected Lois which made her write the book “The Giver”. She wanted to tell other people how memories, choices and individuality are extremely important to different people and communities. 

Personal, political, and religious beliefs:

Lois Lowery embraces individuality, memories, emotions as the key to shaping who we are and how we connect with others. She disagrees with the Bellinis of societies where freedom is traded for safety or control. Lois argues that one's choice matters and finds it that a person is robbed of their option in society. However ‘The Giver’ doesn’t talk much about option rather it explores the deeper questions in life, free will, and makes us think more in a more spiritual way.

What she wants to show,tell and warn:

 She wrote The Giver to show how important freedom, choices and emotions are in life. She wanted the readers to know that even though life can be hard and painful, it’s better to feel and experience things fully than to live in a world without emotions and real connection.

Challenge:

Knowing what an author thinks before reading a book can help us understand the meaning of the book deeper and make the experience more enjoyable since things like the reason for the book's creation, small easter eggs, and extra information can make the book make more sense and engaging. However the author might have a bias or different viewpoints about certain topics that is not entirely reliable. If someone were to read the book it may alter their opinion with irrelevant and inaccurate information.
