The social structure for the AnglSaxons was like many other civilizations, the order starting from the bottom being: Slaves, manumitted slaves and Celts, Churls, Thanes, then the King. The Slaves were pieces of property and had few civil rights. The manumitted slaves were simply slaves that had been freed. The Churls made up most of the population and had the same rights as the Thanes. The Thanes had the privilege of owning land and had the freedom to move about the country.

The Anglo-Saxons are a group that originally lived in the area now known as Germany. The earliest records of this group come from Roman writers recording the difficulties that this group gave them. The Anglo-Saxons were illiterate, so all that we know of them come from people writing reports about them. Joining with the Franks that were to the south of them, they attacked the Romans in Britain, which succeeded at first but they were eventually attacked by a commander of the Roman armies named Carausius, which caused them to be pushed back. Eventually, the Anglo-Saxons made their way into Britain and made a huge development on the English language.
