After Dropping out of college he got a job sweeping floors at a recording studio in Manhattan 

After only a few months he got fired 

Luckily through a friend he managed to get a job at another recording studio called "the Record Plant"

In 1973, on Easter Sunday, the recording studio called to ask Jimmy to come in that day to answer the phones.

Being from a catholic background his mother didn't think it was a good idea as it was Easter Sunday, however Jimmy wanted to prove his worth and went in to answer the phones.

To Jimmy's surprise John Lennon was in the studio to do some recording and the owner of "the record plant" asked Jimmy to come in to be the assistant engineer. 

It was Jimmy Iovine's first test of character.

In 1974 Bruce Springsteen came to "the record plant" to record his take off album "Born to Run"

Springsteen was very meticulous with every sound and beat on the record that the recording process for the album took much longer than anticipated.

This frustrated Jimmy Iovine and he nearly considered quitting.

Jon Landau (Bruce Springsteens Record Producer & Manager) explained to Jimmy that "this wasn't about him and that it was about Bruce, and if he could learn that lesson he'd have a friend for life".

Jimmy understood this and it became one of the first major lessons that would make him a great leader.

Jimmy learned a work ethic from Bruce Springsteen that he took forward with him " I was a guy who would say, Five o'clock, I'm out of here. Springsteen worked all the time. We were in a room with no window—no one ever knew what time it was."

Jimmy also learned that he had to be ambitious for the artists he was working for and not for himself in order for them to be successful

Between 1970 and 1980, Jimmy worked as a sound engineer and then a record producer.

He worked with great Artist such as Tom Petty, Patti Smith, U2, Stevie Nicks and many more

When it came to working with any artist he always took the approach that the most important thing was the success off the artist and nothing else.

Jimmys personal mantra of "It's not about you" helps highlight that he is a leader who puts his clients first and they respected him for this

In the late 80's Jimmy Iovine felt he was too old to be in the studio as a producer, as the artist were getting younger he was getting older, he felt a disconnect.

This inspired him to start his own record label

A joint venture between himself and a man called Ted Field.

Jimmy and Ted were determined that Interscope records would be run by "People" and not lawyers.

The had a laissez-faire ethos and felt if you were good they wanted you it didn't matter about the artists background.

This approach to signing artists would result in the label signing artists such as Trent Reznor of the Nine Inch Nails and 2pac.

Jimmy and Ted's laissez-faire approach was most evident when they signed Trent Reznor and immediately gave him his own subsidiary label where he could sign the artist he wanted to sign. 

Marylin Manson was one of the first artists signed to Reznor's label.

In 1992 Jimmy Iovine helped set up Death Row Records and the release of Dr. Dre's "The Chronic".

The album was a success financial but came with harsh criticism from politicians who felt the album only promoted violence.

Jimmy Iovine stood by Dr. Dre through the backlash.

In 1996 Dr. Dre left Death Row Records and with the help of Jimmy Iovine set up his own label called "Aftermath".

The first few years of Aftermath could be considered a failure as several projects didn't hit the heights that were expected.

With pressures high Jimmy Iovine accepted a mix-tape given to him by a 19 year old inter. Jimmy passed the mixtape onto Dr. Dre

The artist on the Mixtape was a white rapper from Detroit called Eminem.

Many people inside and outside "aftermath" told Dr. Dre to not sign Eminem due to him being white meaning he wouldn't sell

However Jimmy Iovine told Dr. Dre to believe in his gut instinct.

Eminem's first album on the label "The slim shady LP" would be certified 4 times platinum.

Other noticeable artist that were signed to aftermath were 50 Cent, Enrique Iglesias and the Game

In 2006 Jimmy Iovine convinced Dr. Dre to co found Beats a company that produced audio sound systems.

Through heavy marketing of celebrities and sports stars wearing beats products as well as Dr. Dres name attached, the company was a success 

By 2013 the company was worth $1 billion.

However Jimmy Iovine felt that due to internet and the ease of illegal downloading the music industry was getting severely damaged.

Iovine bought a streaming service under the beats name which went into service in January 2014.

In May 2014 Apple announced that they were buying beats electronic for $3 billion dollars.

When Apple bought Beats Electronic, Jimmy Iovine also moved over to apple to become the head of "Apple Music" a music streaming service.

In 2015 Apple Music launched in 100 countries 

Beats streaming service had 250'000 paid subscribers when apple purchased the service

By the end of 2016 Apple Music had reached 20 million subscribers.

• He is self-confident but far from arrogant. He is aware of his successes but is always looking forward.

• He shows faith in colleagues even when he thinks they are wrong.. 

“David Geffen [the co-founder of DreamWorks Animation] and I disagree a lot. I bet on his answers a little more than my own. I say, This guy’s really smart. I think he’s completely wrong, but I’m going to try it anyway.”

• By embracing opinions that are different to his it shows his colleagues that their opinions and ideas are worth something. This can motivate an employee to go that extra step because they know they have the backing of their superior
• A good leader is also able to listen to other peoples opinions and take criticism on board 

“If your ego and your accomplishments stop you from listening, then they’ve taught you nothing.”

• Jimmy often showed faith in people that would normally be consider below him. He had no issue or doubt in taking a mixtape from a 19 year old intern, which would lead to one of the best selling hip-hop artists of all time.

“At the height of Interscope, a nineteen-year-old kid said to me, ‘I’ve got a tape of a white rapper.’ I said, ‘Give it to me. I’ll give it to Dr. Dre.’ That was Eminem.”

• Jimmy Iovine is not afraid of failure as long as it meant he made an attempt. This is what a good leader is about a willingness to go into the unknown in order to come out the other side.

"Fear wants to be a headwind. If you could practice judo and make it a tailwind, it's so powerful. You gotta get it to push you forward. Be willing to fail"
