These poems are the most collective effort I’ve put into my writing and poetry to date. This year has been more harrowing and challenging as a trans-queer-mixed race brown cutie, and I’ve found so much solace in the earth around me. Animals, plants, and reflection wrap themselves throughout these pieces. I found that my process of writing is much more accessible when I have folks to work with in person and to be able to share and bounce ideas and emotions within my poem. I found that my editing process has been much more refined thanks to the Poetry 4 People sections of critiquing and revising a poems. The guidelines truly helped me name the spirit of my poems and what stories I want to specifically tell in them. I think overall I will continue to practice poetry in my own ways and invite my communities to join me, whether it be in a short form prompted poetry as I did in my field project or in a more one on one intentional creative practice.

The poem of the week I choose was my favorite share of the semester, the voice is playful and silly while being honest about the difficulties of humanity. I love love love humor in poetry as mine often lacks it and especially a poem as rooted as this one is.

My intention is to provide myself a place to reflect and find strength in the ability to push through a world that grows ever darker. Thankfully, it’s only in the deepest of darknesses where we can finally appreciate the light.
