Her parents decided to do that because the pig was very small and weak, and they thought that it probably died later on. However, Fern could not accept that, so she ran outdoors and caught up with her father to stop him. She argued with her father while trying to pull the ax out of his hand. After the argument, Mr. Arable decided to let her raise the pig so that she could understand the trouble a runt could be. Fern went home first, then, her father brought the pig with him. After Avery, her brother, came in to the room, the Arable family had breakfast, and Fern fed the infant on milk. After breakfast, the children got on the bus. By the time the bus reached school, she had named her pet Wilbur, the name of the capital of Pennsylvania.

At two weeks of age he was moved outdoors, in a large wooden box with straw and a doorway under an apple tree. Fern fed Wilbur, then, he slept in the box. After that day, he always followed her except the time when went to school. When he was five weeks old, Mr. Arable decided to sell him. Fern broke down and wept, so Mrs. Arable suggested selling him to her Uncle Homer for six dollars so that she could visit him. Next day, Wilbur went to live in a manure pile in the cellar of Zuckerman’s barn.

When  Wilbur was almost two months old,  Fern had not arrived for her usual visit. Wilbur was so bored and tired of living. The goose live next to Wilbur's pen saw that and suggested Wilbur escaping.  In a minute he had squeezed through the fence and enjoy the feeling of free. Mrs.Zuckerman saw him and shout for the men. The news of Wilbur's escape spread rapidly among the animals on the place.  Everybody was after him.  Wilbur didn't know what to do or which way to run.  He tried to follow the instructions his friends were giving him.
