Fareed Zakaria makes it his point to inform the reader that a Liberal Education is just as important as a skilled based education. He challenges this by stating the problems that come hand in hand when receiving a liberal education. Zakaria's lead argument is that the financial inequality of students lead to no equal access to a liberal education. He goes on to mention the attitudes and the lack of appreciation society has towards receiving a liberal education. Along with Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson, who believe that access to a liberal education should be demanded regardless of financial status, the best and brightest should have an equal chance at rising to the top.

Fareed Zakaria expresses the importance of a Liberal Education mainly by explaining why it is so important. In this comes the debate of the meaning of a Liberal Education, the history of a Liberal Education, and the values of a Liberal Education. Zakaria says that the meaning of a Liberal Education is that, “….” The history of a Liberal Education started to change twenty-five hundred years ago in Ancient Greece.

The problem with a liberal education is that it is no longer appreciated the way that it used to be. In the 50’s and 60’s in America, a liberal education was very important to a lot of people. However, once the 70’s hit, and throughout the last 40 years, the views on a liberal educaton have changed completely. Not everyone has access to a liberal education because of financial inequality.

Towards the end of the book, Zakaria proposed a solution to the cost problem. His idea was MOOCs, which stands for massive online open courses. By implementing this, it would decrease the cost that a university has to spend on the professors, which would allow a lot more people to afford it. Zakaria quotes Richard Levin, “the greatest impact of MOOCs will be in the developing world, where it will be possible for millions to get educated who simply would not have otherwise” (Zakaria 132).
