If I need to teach a Grammar Topic or a novel, what do I have to change? Do I need to fill in a standalone planner each time, for each Grammar Topic etc?

10.00-11.15: Language is language. What the PYP says about language applies to all language and learning. We are PYP teachers of language(s), not language teachers in PYP schools: what makes one a PYP teacher? A language policy is better seen as a process rather than a product.

11.15-11.30: break

11.30-12.45: What makes a good language learner? What does language look like in a PYP classroom?

12.45-13.30: lunch

13.30-14.45: Children learn language when it is meaningful to them. Children learn language by hypothesizing about rules and structures. When we look at the balance of: learning language, learning about language and learning through language, we are looking at the child’s whole language experience: ‘language learning is experience, not age or stage of development’ (Harste)

14.45-15.00: break

15.00-16.00: A language teacher can have an advisory, supportive or integrated role in teaching and learning in a transdisciplinary unit of inquiry.

I am sure we'll benefit a lot from the workshop as language teachers who have a great role in students' whole language learning experience by helping them develop life skills of collaboration, cooperation, critical thinking, problem solving and creativity. Multilingualism is a 'right' and a 'fact' - the right language is all the languages available.

A common way of communication can help to foster understanding between different cultures to see different perspectives. With the knowledge of different languages this can be achieved.

Programme standard and practices

All teachers are responsible for language development.
There should be a policy in place to implement and communicate language. This should be reviewed regularly and updated.
Students need to learn a language in addition to the language of instruction at least from the age of 7.

Language policy - Despite the subject, all teachers are essentially language teachers. Room should always be made to support the home language and culture of international students.

Language policy

The language policy includes the profile of thinkers as critical thinking is another area we strive to incorporate into the activities.
Differentiation instruction is supported.

However the profiles of risk takers. inquirers, balanced and principled are not addressed. The language policy currently in place needs to be inclusive of these profiles too.

We need to ensure practices are in place to provide inclusion.
Children that speak another language at home shouldn't feel left out. We need to integrate the home language within our current language policy.
Children that speak another language at home should feel encouraged and helped to develop their native language at school and at home.
This can be first established through a questionnaire that can be sent home to acquire the necessary information for next steps.
Aside from this parents of the child should always be included in the process.

Do not use students home languages in any beneficial way.

Case studies - 43 full time teachers and still learning Spanish as a separate subject as its supporting their mother tongue. However school is still required to follow the national curriculum.

Integration - this needs to be cross subject and students should be aware that they are learning similar things in all subjects whether that's with their class teacher or within specialist subjects such as P.E. etc.
